Bananas could be future staple

Climate change could lead to crops from the banana family becoming a critical food source for millions of people, a new report says.

Researchers from the CGIAR agricultural partnership say the fruit might replace potatoes in some developing countries.

Cassava and the little-known cowpea plant could be much more important food crops as temperatures rise.

People will have to adapt to new and varied menus as traditional crops struggle, say the authors.

When the farmers see the problems they are having with production, they really are willing to shift?

End Quote Bruce Campbell CCAFS

Responding to a request from the United Nations' committee on world food security, a group of experts in the field looked at the projected effects of climate change on 22 of the world's most important agricultural commodities.

Blooming bananas

They predict that the world's three biggest crops in terms of calories provided - maize, rice and wheat - will decrease in many developing countries.

They suggest that the potato, which grows best in cooler climates, could also suffer as temperatures increase and weather becomes more volatile.

The authors argue that these changes "could provide an opening for cultivating certain varieties of bananas" at higher altitudes, even in those places that currently grow potatoes.

Dr Philip Thornton is one of those behind the report. He told BBC News that while bananas and plantains also have limiting factors, they may be a good substitute for potatoes in certain locations.

"It's not necessarily a silver bullet, but there may be places where as temperatures increase, bananas might be one option that small-holders could start to look at."

The report describes wheat as the world's most important plant-derived protein and calorie source.

But according to this research, wheat will face a difficult future in the developing world, where higher prices for cotton, maize and soybeans have pushed wheat to marginal land, making it more vulnerable to stresses induced by climate change.

One substitute, especially in South Asia, could be cassava - which is known to be tolerant to a range of climate stresses.

But how easy will it be to get people to adjust to new crops and new diets?

Bruce Campbell is programme director of the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security research group (CCAFS) which co-ordinates work among leading institutions around the world. He told BBC News that the types of changes that will happen in the future have already happened in the past.

Protein under pressure

"Two decades ago there was almost no rice consumption in certain areas of Africa, now there is. People have changed because of the pricing: it's easier to get, it's easier to cook. I think those sort of shifts do occur and I think they will in future."

About bananas

 • There are hundreds of types of banana plants but not all actually produce fruit
 • They grow on plants that are giant herbs and are part of the Musaceae family
 • Plantains are starchy like a potato, not sweet like a regular banana
 • Organised banana plantations have been traced back to China in 200 AD
 • Alexander the Great brought them back from India after his conquest in 327 BC
 • Over the centuries they have been called banna, ghana and funana

One of the big concerns among researchers is how to tackle the need for protein in the diet. Soybeans are one of the most common sources but are very susceptible to temperature changes.

The scientists say that the cowpea, which is known in sub-Saharan Africa as the "poor man's meat" is drought-tolerant and prefers warmer weather and could be a reasonable alternative to soya. The vines of the cowpea can also be used as a feed for livestock.

In some countries, including Nigeria and Niger, farmers have already moved away from cotton production to growing cowpeas.

There are also likely to be developments in animal protein sources says the report, including a shift to smaller livestock.

"This is an example of something that's happening already," said Dr Campbell. "There's been quite a shift from cattle keeping to goat keeping in southern Africa in face of droughts - when the farmers see the problems they are having with production, they really are willing to shift.

"Change is really possible. It's not just a crazy notion."

Obama criticizes GOP candidate's rape remarks

(AP) ? President Barack Obama on Wednesday night criticized Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock for his remarks about rape and pregnancy, saying that "rape is rape" and that the Republican's comments "don't make any sense to me."

Mourdock said during a debate Tuesday night that when pregnancy occurs from rape, then it is "something God intended." The Indiana Republican opposes abortion except when the woman's life is in danger.

Obama was appearing on "The Tonight Show" when host Jay Leno asked him about Mourdock's remarks and referred to another Republican Senate hopeful, Missouri's Todd Akin. Earlier in his campaign Akin, also an opponent of abortion, referred to "legitimate rape" when contending that women's bodies are capable of preventing pregnancy after rape.

"Well, I don't know how these guys come up with these ideas," Obama said. "Let me make a very simple proposition. Rape is rape. It is a crime. And so these various distinctions about rape don't make too much sense to me ? don't make any sense to me."

Obama added: "This is exactly why you don't want a bunch of politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women's health care decisions. Women are capable of making these decisions in consultation with their partners, with their doctors. And for politicians to want to intrude in this stuff, oftentimes without any information, is a huge problem. And this is obviously part of what's stake at this election."

Earlier Wednesday, Mourdock refused to apologize for the "something God intended" remark but said that he regrets that some may have misconstrued and "twisted" his comments.

Wooden baking utensils and pie-making essentials on sale at ALDI ...

Author and pie baker Beth M. Howard in front of the American Gothic House

Beth M. Howard bakes lots of pies, teaches pie-baking classes, and recently wrote a book ? ?Making Piece: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Pie? ? that ?creates the perfect synergy between two of America?s greatest icons?pie and the American Gothic House, the little farmhouse immortalized in Grant Wood?s famous painting, where she now lives and runs the Pitchfork Pie Stand.?

As a result, when she posts an ?ALDI Alert? on her Facebook page about a sale on baking and pastry utensils, we pay attention.

This morning, I visited the ALDI store on Watts Road and checked out the sturdy silicone and solid beechwood spatulas ($1.99 in a variety of sizes); and cookie dough scoops, stainless steel pastry blenders, pastry scrapers, and dough cutters ($3.99). If you need some of these baking tools and live near an ALDI store, you may want to pay a visit. There are additional metal bakeware items on sale ($2.99) and a Crofton Stan Mixer with stainless steel bowl on sale for $29.99.

The clerk I talked to said that the sale lasts as long as items are available. Visit the ALDI website to locate a store near you and to see an online version of their current sale flyer.

Sports: An Interview With 'Benji' Directors Coodie and Chike

Directors Coodie and Chike

Directors Coodie and Chike

Through some fortuitous coincidences I was able to sit down with the directors of ESPN Films Benji, Coodie and Chike (creators of Creative Control and directors of Kanye Wests Through the Wire) as well as PR professional Jay Jay Nesheim of ESPN Films.

We had breakfast for an hour at theWit Chicago discussing the difficulties of getting some interviewees to come on camera, the perceived legacy of Ben Wilson, and most importantly, how they got Avon Barksdale to narrate their film. Due to the nature of our free flowing conversation, Ive edited the interview a bit (eliminating the casual uhs and ums and an occasional hilarious Coodie story about his street-life past that is best left off the record) to make it a little more concise.

Austin Chronicle: How much did you actually know about Benji before you started doing all of your interviews and research?

Coodie: I knew everything. When my sister was in high school she went to Julian. So when [Ben Wilson] would come play Barron Ervin [of Julian] we used to try and sneak in and see them play.

[Coodie was in seventh grade.]

Chike: Im from New Orleans actually, I actually found out through Coodie when we initially met, and Im surpsied I hadnt heard about it yet, because I grew up playing basketball as well. I was like, man this is crazy. This story is insane.

[When presenting their idea to tell the Ben Wilson story as a 30 for 30 film, Coodie and Chike were beat to the punch, but they had an advantage.]

Coodie: So when we went in [to ESPN], they said "Seven people came in pitching Ben Wilson. What y'all going to do different? You got footage? Oh yeah, we got footage.

[Coodie and Chike hooked up with Chucki Vision, who had been shooting high school basketball since 1984. A majority of the clips in the film are courtesy of him.]

Coodie: At the present time of that happening, we were watching all of these clips on TV, crying like if you watched a movie. This was life, though, this was someone we were looking up to, knowing he was going to make it.

AC: How did getting Wood Harris (The Wire, Remember the Titans) come along?

Coodie: Well Wood Harris is from Chicago, and we both went to Northern Illinois together. So weve been friends since then. You know, we were thinking about who would do this. We were thinking Michael Clark Duncan, rest in peace, and we thought about Common, but then we were talking about Wood and Im like, "Wood, that would be perfect!" So I just called him up.

AC: Whats the story with Omar Dixon, as far as trying to get an interview?

Chike: We tried hard, but the maximum security prison wouldnt allow it. Either they wouldnt allow it or he just didnt want to do it because he didnt respond to any of our letters.

AC: Omar Dixon is like Randy Wagstaff. He's the sweetest boy, he has nothing to do with the murder. Then of course, he becomes the hardest of all the kids.

Chike: He probably wasn't the sweetest of kids, because he was still probably hardend from the neighborhood .... They probably weren't innocent kids as far as, they were in the circumstance, but they weren't bad kids to make that type of decision.

Coodie: You could look at me and say I was innocent. We was doing the same thing Billy [Moore]and Omar were doing. We were Billy and Omar. Everybody. Even if you werent in a gang, you were surrounded by gangs. I might as well have been in a gang. There was a lot of fighting. We had guns, but thank god I didnt shoot nobody.

Chike: The was one thing that Billy brought to my attention. Theres a part at the beginning of the film when Curtis [Bens brother] is like, "Our mother taught us some important things like use your manners." It sounds like something good to say when it relates to your upbringing, but thats the one thing that Benji didnt say, he did the exact opposite, and thats what got him killed. Thats crazy.

Jay Jay: Last night at the Chicago Film Festival, it was our last screening, and at the very end, Billy and several of Bens friends came up for a Q&A. And it was the first time ever that they talked with Billy together. First time them saying, I forgive you.

AC: Was it relatively easy to get Billy to do the doc?

Chike: It wasnt easy to him to do the doc because he was fearful putting his story out there like that because no ones ever seen him. All they know of him is this demonized kid, nobodys put a face to that, but everyones got a preconceived notion of him being this devil. He could hide behind that. He can walk the streets easily without people recognizing him. We could have put him out there crazy if we wanted to, but he had to have a certain trust with us to make sure that we would depict him in the right light, favorable enough to where he could be comfortable enough to still have a life.

AC: You can tell he still struggles with what happened that night.

Chike: He dont just hold the weight of killing Benji, he also holds the weight of Omar, an innocent person. You can tell that was one of his main concerns, more than anything, was Omar. You could tell that he still really holds that. He's gonna take that to his grave. Thats a huge burden.

Coodie: When they got sentenced, when we got the actual court drawings, Omars head was down. And before we've even seen this, Billy was like, Man, I remember when we got sentenced and Omars head was down. Right at that point, I was like, go ahead and pick your head up. Dont go out like that. Pick your head up. We gotta do what we gotta do.

And then he said how when he turned 18, they took him to the county. And at the county, they tried to make him commit suicide. They told him to write a letter to his mom, that he cant cope and he wouldnt do it. But he had his mom and the preacher and everybody come up to the jail and they was raising hell to see him. And because he wouldnt sign that letter, he said he took a beating, but Thats what prepared me for prison. Deep.

AC: There were three interviews you werent able to get [Mary Wilson, JaTon, and Omar Dixon]. Of those three, which do you wish you were able to get?

Coodie: Of course, you know, his mom passed away [in 2000], we couldnt get her, but that would have been the perfect person. Actually, we was going to tell our story through her, through her book, For the Love of Benji, but we didnt do it.

Chike: Honestly, for JaTon not to do it speaks volumes to me to what really happened. If she did it, maybe she would have muddied it up.

Jay Jay: And she could have come off either way based on two ways: on what she said and how she said it. No one can blame a teenage girl who has a 10-week-old child for being afraid that her boyfriends murderer is going to walk. If those cops are saying, "These guys are going to walk if you just say they just bumped into each other then went at it, theres no way these guys are going to go to jail for this and so you have to say it was robbery," like no would blame her.

Coodie: Coach Hambrick said that him and Coach Hambrick would always meet every day for lunch. And that was the only time that he didnt meet Coach Hambrick at lunch.

Jay Jay: They were fighting about whatever they were fighting about.

Coodie: Right, so he felt the need to walk her.

Jay Jay: Theres no reason that she doesnt know that shes the reason he was on the street that day and the reason he was mad enough.

Chike: But one thing though, we just dont know. We dont know because we didnt get to talk to her, so we just dont know. We just know that she didnt want to be a part of this film.

AC: What did you think [Ben Wilsons] legacy was before this documentary and what do you think its going to be? For Billy, too.

Chike: Before the legacy dealt with strictly basketball, as far as Chicago and Simeon, and him being a foundation of that great institution and how well theyve done through sports. Now I think the legacy transcends far past basketball and past Chicago, and now it deals with community and it deals with saving people's lives. And thats major, and on both sides; on Billys side and Bens side and its crazy because their legacies kind of come together to do work in a positive manner. What youd consider enemies because of the situation, its now like an allied force thats going to make positive change.

Coodie: And I think too, that the legacy now is that its actually humanized Ben Wilson who was like this mythical character or superhero that we looked up to that couldnt do no wrong. It humanized him. Thats going to make a big difference now that they see he wasnt a perfect kid, which no kid is perfect. Its going to resonate with the athletes when they snap out on somebody thinking they more powerful because of their ability.

And Billy, just by his story, is going to ring true to Chicago and save some lives based on the fact that that one decision Billy made to pull that trigger changed his life and he wished so bad that the bullet went right back in the barrel and he could just put it back in his thing. Right after he did it theres not turning back. Your life is destroyed. Your familys life is destroyed. The person you shot and killed and his familys life is destroyed. In fact a whole city was destroyed and we lost a lot of hope because of that. That one little decision changed his life and hes still living with it.

What should be taught, what you need to get out of this movie is think before you act. And also set a goal, and if you set a goal and work hard you will achieve it. You know what I mean? And those are two big things. Ben Wilson set a goal, he worked hard and he achieved his goal which was to be number one in the nation. He passed away right after, but also he wanted to make change .... He used to look up to Martin Luther King and he was like, "Man I'm gonna make change like Martin Luther King did." And actually, through his death, he made change. If it wasn't for him, it would still be at the 700, 800 deaths, because kids still gettin' shot, but now ambulances have to take them to a trauma center. So that change saved lives.

Chike: He becomes a martyr now. Maybe this was suppose to happen. Some people die to save other people's lives. It was like he was that martyr. It cost one life to save who knows how many more lives.

Apple unwraps mini-iPad

iPad mini

Report an error

SAN JOSE - Apple Inc took the wraps off an 8-inch tablet on Tuesday in its biggest product move since the debut of the iPad two years ago, launching a smaller version of the gadget into a market staked out by Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc.

The 7.9 inch ?iPad mini? marks Apple?s first foray into the smaller-tablet segment. Apple also announced a fourth-generation full-sized iPad with improvements in graphics and processing speeds, just two days before Microsoft <MS FT.O> is due to show off its own ?Surface? tablet.

Apple hopes to beat back their charge onto its home turf of consumer electronics hardware, while safeguarding its lead in the larger 10-inch tablet space that even deep-pocketed rivals like Samsung Electronics have found tough to penetrate.

Chief Executive Tim Cook kicked off Tuesday?s event, held at the opulent California Theater in San Jose, by touting the just-launched iPhone 5 as the fastest-selling smartphone in history. He added that there are now 200 million devices running iOS6, the fastest upgrade rate he has seen since the mobile software was launched about a month ago.

Amazon?s Kindle and Google?s Nexus 7 have grabbed a chunk of the lower end of the tablet market and proved demand for a pocket-sized slate exists. That has forced Apple into a space it has avoided and at times derided, analysts say.

A smaller tablet would mark the first device to be added to Apple?s compact portfolio under Cook, who took over from co-founder Steve Jobs just before his death.

?Apple sensed early that they had a real winner with the iPad and that has proven to be correct,? said Lars Albright, co-founder of mobile advertising startup SessionM and a former Apple ad executive. ?They have a large market share, and to protect that market share they have got to be innovative.?

In a rarity for a company that tightly controls events, Apple live-streamed its invitation-only presentation - where it is expected to unveil the mini tablet - to Apple devices such as the iPad and Macintosh computers.

Wall Street analysts have said for months that Apple was planning a less expensive version of the iPad to take on cheaper competing devices, a move they say might hurt its margins but prevent its rivals from dominating an increasingly important segment.

Will you be getting a mini-iPad?

India to give free generic drugs to hundreds of millions ???????????????

India has put in place a US$5.4 billion (NT$157.6 billion) policy to provide free medicine to its people.

From city hospitals to tiny rural clinics, India?s public doctors will soon be able to prescribe free generic drugs to all comers, vastly expanding access to medicine in a country where public spending on health was just US$4.50 per person last year.

Under the plan, doctors will be limited to a generics-only drug list and face punishment for prescribing branded medicines, a major disadvantage for pharmaceutical giants in one of the world?s fastest-growing drug markets.

?Without a doubt, it is a considerable blow to an already beleaguered industry, ? said KPMG partner Chris Stirling.

But the initiative would overhaul a system where healthcare is often a luxury, despite 40 percent of the people living below the poverty line, or US$1.25 a day or less.

Within five years, up to half of India?s 1.2 billion people are likely to take advantage of the scheme, the government says. Others are likely to continue visiting private hospitals and clinics, where the scheme will not operate.

Woman who jumped overboard from cruise ship rescued

20 hrs.

A Carnival cruise ship passenger who was spotted jumping overboard was rescued Sunday, company officials said.

The 29-year-old woman was aboard the Carnival Destiny, which had left the Port of Miami on Saturday, when she was witnessed jumping overboard around 12:10 a.m., according to a statement from the company.

The ship immediately began search and rescue operations and located the woman. She was brought on board and treated at the ship's medical center.

Ship physicians determined the woman needed further treatment at a shoreside facility and the Destiny deviated its course to Key West instead of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

The ship, which is on a five-day Caribbean cruise, is scheduled to return on Thursday.

What's Your Stress Reaction? | Coaching Excellence

What causes us to age, both biologically and emotionally?

It?s stress.

Stress taxes the body and mind, and usually results in people feeling as if they?re at the effect of life?s circumstances.

There are three main types of stress:

1. Physical Stress- on your body, from the work you do

2. Spiritual Stress- when your body, mind, and spirit aren?t consciously connected and you?re not following a purposeful path

3. Emotional Stress- caused by misperception of things that happen in your life

Everyone has stress in their lives and most people say they want less stress. But what people really want is to have less of a ?stress reaction? to the things that are occurring in their lives and zapping their energy.

Don?t expect to eliminate stressors in life; it?s how you cope with them that matters.

When you notice that you?re feeling overwhelmed, what?s your strategy to regain control and lessen your stress reaction?

Astronomers study 2-million-light-year 'extragalactic afterburner'

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Blasting over two million lights years from the centre of a distant galaxy is a supersonic jet of material that looks strikingly similar to the afterburner flow of a fighter jet, except in this case the jet engine is a supermassive black hole and the jet material is moving at nearly the speed of light.

Research published over the weekend in the Astrophysical Journal Letters shows the galaxy-scale jet to have bright and dark regions, similar to the phenomenon in an afterburner exhaust called 'shock diamonds.'

A new image of the previously studied jet reveals regularly spaced areas that are brighter than the rest of the jet in a pattern that echoes the way the afterburner from a jet engine has brighter diamond-shaped areas in its general glow.

"One intriguing possibility is that the pattern we see in this cosmic jet is produced in the same way as the pattern in the exhaust from fighter jet engines," said Dr Leith Godfrey, from the Curtin University node of The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research.

Dr Godfrey said the jets are produced when material falls onto a supermassive black hole at the centre of a galaxy, but many details beyond that remain unknown.

"Massive jets like this one have been studied for decades, since the beginning of radio astronomy, but we still don't understand exactly how they are produced or what they're made of," he said.

"If the brighter patches are caused by the same process in astronomical jets as they are in earthly jet engines, then the distance between them can give us important information about the power of the jet and the density of the surrounding space."

Dr Godfrey said that jets like the one he studied are the largest objects in the Universe, about 100 times larger than the Milky Way.

"If we want to understand how galaxies form and grow, we need to understand these jets. They are extremely powerful and are believed to stop stars forming in their parent galaxy, limiting how big the galaxies can grow and effecting how the Universe looks today," he said.

"This new image of the jet shows detail we've never seen before and the pattern we revealed provides a clue to how jets like this one work," said Dr Jim Lovell, a co-author from the University of Tasmania.

"This particular jet emits a lot of X-rays, which is hard to explain with our current models. Our new find is a step forward in understanding how these giant objects emit so much X-Ray radiation, and indirectly, will help us understand how the jet came to be."

Dr Lovell said that the image had been taken using the CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array radio telescope in New South Wales.

Stephen Colbert Confirmed For 'Hobbit' Cameo

As far as celebrities go, no one comes close to Stephen Colbert's Tolkien fanaticism. (For further evidence, just watch this video of Colbert drop some knowledge on James Franco at the 4 minute mark.) So that's why it couldn't be more appropriate that the leader of Colbert Nation will be making a cameo appearance in [...]

Dave & Buster's names Xbox co-creator to head game strategy ...

Dave & Buster?s restaurant chain has named Xbox co-creator Kevin Bachus as its senior vice president of entertainment and game strategy.

Bachus was one of four people who started the Xbox game console business and helped turn it into a reality. Today, it is a multibillion-dollar business and is Microsoft?s most successful diversification beyond the PC to date. He previously served as the chief product officer of social network Bebo.

In the newly created role, Bachus will be responsible for evolving Dallas-based Dave & Buster?s from on-premise-based entertainment to multi-platform gaming, including mobile and online.

?We are thrilled to welcome Kevin to our team,? said Steve King, chief executive officer of Dave & Buster?s. ?He has a remarkable record in the gaming industry and high-impact expertise in social networks, new product development and game console software. His skills will be critically important as we continue to develop and implement the strategy for our multi-platform future.?

?Video game enthusiasts are always looking for the next big thing, and I believe Dave & Buster?s is uniquely positioned to deliver it to them,? said Bachus. ?As a long-time fan of Dave & Buster?s, I am excited to have the opportunity to help shape the next phase of interactive entertainment outside of the home.?

Dave & Buster?s was founded in 1982 and it operates 60 entertainment restaurants in the U.S.

Bachus was one of the four individuals ? Seamus Blackley, Ted Hase, and Otto Berkes are the others ? who started working on the Xbox game console to head off the threat from the Sony PlayStation 2, which the Japanese company hoped would supplant the Windows PC in the home. (I wrote about this is my book, Opening the Xbox). They convinced Bill Gates and industry naysayers that Microsoft could become a credible force in games. Their initiative was a model for how to start a brand new business within an industry behemoth. Bachus? job was to convince third-party publishers to make games for the Xbox ? without getting laughed out of the room.

But Bachus left before the Xbox shipped and joined Blackley at Capital Entertainment Group, which focused on producing games from independent game makers. Then he became president and later chief executive of Infinium Labs, a digital game distribution company that never got its product out the door and ran afoul of regulators. He also served as head of Nival Interactive, the largest game developer in Eastern Europe. Since he left Nival a couple of years ago, Bachus worked as senior vice president of service for PlaydayTV and as a consultant for digital distribution firm IMHO.

Energy-sensing switch discovery could have broad implications

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? Biochemists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have discovered a genetic sequence that can alter its host gene's activity in response to cellular energy levels. The scientists have found this particular energy-sensing switch in bacterial genes, which could make it a target for a powerful new class of antibiotics. If similar energy-sensing switches are also identified for human genes, they may be useful for treating metabolism-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

"This discovery adds a new dimension to our understanding of how cells sense and manage their energy levels, which is one of the most important processes in biology," said the study's senior author, Martha J. Fedor, a professor the departments of Chemical Physiology and Molecular Biology and a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

The findings are described online ahead of print on October 21, 2012, in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

A Fuel Sensor

This type of gene-switching sequence is known as a riboswitch because it appears on the strand of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that is first transcribed from a gene's DNA. Unlike other known riboswitches, which have relatively limited functions, this one acts as a sensor for the basic molecular fuel that powers all living cells and controls many genes.

The newly discovered riboswitch detects a small molecule known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the standard unit of chemical energy in all known organisms on our planet. Scientists had thought that cells use only large and relatively complex proteins to sense these all-important energy molecules and adjust cell activities accordingly. No one had found ATP sensors among riboswitches, which can alter cell activity at a more fundamental level -- usually by interrupting a gene's transcription from DNA.

Moreover, previously described riboswitches are relatively simple feedback sensors that affect narrow metabolic pathways. Most of them merely sense and adjust the expression rate of their own host gene. "This is the first riboswitch that is known to be involved in global metabolic regulation," said Fedor.

In recent years, the Fedor team had found hints that such a riboswitch could exist. Many RNA sequences with possible riboswitch activity had never been characterized, and several riboswitches in bacteria sense molecules that are closely related to ATP. Fedor and a graduate student in her laboratory, Peter Y. Watson, therefore set out to find bacterial riboswitches that could indeed sense ATP.

Caught in the Act

The task was more challenging than it might have seemed. Watson could not simply expose suspected riboswitches to ATP and see which ones stuck best to the energy molecules. ATP is present in high concentrations in cells, and its interactions with its known protein sensors are necessarily fleeting, low-affinity affairs. Interactions with a riboswitch would be expected to look the same. "Such interactions are really too weak to be detected using traditional methods," Watson said. But he found evidence that an RNA interaction with an ATP-like molecule would occur in a way that allows the brief coupling to be caught in the act -- using a burst of ultraviolet radiation, which can create a strong chemical crosslink between two molecules.

In this way, he discovered a stretch of apparent ATP-binding RNA known as the ydaO motif. Watson performed structure-mapping analyses of ydaO to confirm that it binds to ATP and to determine precisely where it binds. Attaching ydaO to a "reporter" gene, he found that in bacterial cells, the reporter gene's expression level stayed low when ATP levels were normal and rose sharply when ATP levels dropped -- as would be expected if ydaO is really an ATP-sensing riboswitch. Even in unaltered cells of a test bacterium, B. subtilis, levels of the genes that normally contain the ydaO motif rose and fell in the same way in response to changing ATP levels.

The ydaO motif occurs in the large subset of bacteria known as gram-positive bacteria. Across these bacterial species, it has been found, to date, on 580 separate genes. "These ydaO-regulated genes encode proteins that have a wide variety of functions, from cell wall metabolism to amino acid transport," Watson said. "It makes sense that a riboswitch in control of such disparate processes would be responding to a central metabolite such as ATP."

New Possibilities

The finding has basic scientific importance because it is the first known example of a riboswitch that binds ATP; it is also the first known riboswitch that has such broad regulatory functions. "It opens up the possibility that RNA switches are involved in the general regulation of metabolism," said Fedor.

The fact that ydaO motifs serve as "off-switches" for key bacterial genes also makes them a potential target for new antibiotics. "Hitting these riboswitches with a small-molecule, ATP-mimicking drug so that they can't turn on genes that promote bacterial growth and survival could be a viable approach," said Fedor.

Her laboratory will now search for other ATP-sensing riboswitches in bacteria and in higher organisms, including humans. A human ATP-sensing riboswitch, if targeted appropriately by drugs, might be able to alter cell activity in ways that help treat common metabolic disorders. Type 2 diabetes, which presently affects several hundred million people worldwide, is known to feature the improper regulation of ATP levels in cells.

Funding for the study, "The ydaO motif is an ATP-sensing riboswitch in Bacillus subtilis," was provided by the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI.

Lenovo H520s

With all-in-one PCs growing in popularity because of their space-saving designs, there's also been a correspondingly burgeoning market for traditional desktop PCs with slimmer profiles. Enter the Lenovo Essential H520s ($449 direct), a desktop that can discreetly fit in some pretty tight workstations thanks to a compact profile that is, in Lenovo's estimation, roughly half the size of a traditional desktop. The H520s can be configured in several ways, and our review unit's configuration landed it under $500. It's a decent performer and most of its faults, like the absence of USB 3.0 connectivity and the inclusion of an older, second-generation "Sandy Bridge" processor, are forgivable when taking its price into consideration. That said, though, there are smaller and more forward-looking entry-level desktop PCs that are better choices for small businesses looking to save space and boost productivity.

Design and Features
The H520s is housed in a chassis that measures 12 by 4.1 by 14.2 inches (HWD). It's slightly taller and wider than the Acer Aspire AX1930-UR10P and significantly larger than the Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p Tiny, but slim and compact enough to discreetly fit in the even the most cramped desk spaces. The H520's black matte-finished chassis is fairly subdued, though it sports a handsome front panel that juxtaposes a brushed metallic finish with touches of glossy black plastic and thin, silvery strips. A vertical slot-loading DVD burner is built into the brushed aluminum portion, while the upper plastic section houses a media card reader, dual USB 2.0 ports, and audio-out and microphone-in jacks. The upper lip of this area is also where the power button is located. The rear of the H520s houses four USB 2.0 ports, VGA and HDMI outputs, an Ethernet port, and audio-out and microphone-in jacks. Overall, the H520s has a decent port selection, though two of its USB 2.0 ports will be occupied by the included wired keyboard and mouse. Moreover, the H520s lacks more forward-looking ports, like USB 3.0, which can be found in the Lenovo M92p Tiny. Still, the inclusion of an HDMI output is a nice touch that isn't found in all systems within this price range, like the Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 71.

Though it's not nearly as diminutive as the Acer AX1930-UR10P, the H520s has roughly the same capacity for internal expansion. The system's 6GB of DDR3 RAM occupies both slots on the motherboard; there's no additional space to add any new hard or optical drives. There's an available half-height PCIe x16 slot and, though there are three free PCIe x1 slots on the motherboard, two are blocked by the H520s's power supply. Unlike the Acer AX1930-UR10P and Lenovo M92p Tiny, though, the H520s does feature integrated Wi-Fi, leaving users free to add, say, a half-height, low-power graphics card in what is otherwise limited PCIe real estate.

The H520's 1TB 7,200rpm hard drive mercifully comes with less preloaded software than one would expect in a sub-$500 system. With surprisingly few exceptions (namely a Google toolbar and Windows Live Essential), most of the preloaded software serves a useful purpose, like full versions of McAfee Antivirus Pro and the CyberLink Power2Go burning suite. There's also a Starter version of Office 2010?which only features Word and Excel, and with limited functionality.

Performance
Lenovo H520s Our review unit came equipped with a 3GHz Intel Core i5-2320 "Sandy Bridge" second-generation processor and an integrated Intel HD 2000 GPU, and was an overall decent performer. Intel HD Graphics 2000 isn't Direct X11 compatible, however, so the H520s couldn't run the Lost Planet 2 DX11 or 3DMark 11benchmark tests. This is fairly common among entry-level systems, like the Acer AX1930-UR10P and Lenovo Edge 71, so it's not terribly surprising. The H520s's PCMark7 score of 2,864 points trumped the rest of its class, edging past the Lenovo Edge 71 (2,826 points) by a whisker while outperforming both the Lenovo M92p Tiny (2,491 points) and Acer AX1930-UR10P (2,371 points) by a wider margin.

The H520s excelled in our multimedia tests. It completed our Handbrake video encoding test in a class-leading 1 minute 21 seconds, outpacing the Lenovo M92p Tiny (1:30) by a narrow margin and easily besting the Lenovo IdeaCentre Q180 (7:24). Likewise, its CineBench R11.5 score of 4.9 points breezed past the competition, including the Lenovo M92p Tiny (3.24) and Acer AX1930-UR10P (3.2). Our Photoshop CS5 test was the sole instance in the multimedia arena where the H520s didn't come out on top, as its time of 3 minutes 39 seconds fell behind the Lenovo M92p Tiny (3:21) and was two seconds short of the Acer AX1930-UR10P (3:37).

Lenovo H520s

Like the rest of its class, the H520s no gaming rig, so it's no surprise that it scored 13 frames per second (fps) in medium-quality settings and 2fps in very high-quality settings. The scores were were on par with the those of the Acer AX1930-UR10P (12fps and 2fps, respectively) and slightly below those of the Lenovo M92p Tiny (18fps and 2 fps, respectively).

The Lenovo H520s combines decent performance and good value into a compact chassis. Still, it's not as forward looking or as compact as the current Editors' Choice for entry-level business desktop PCs, the Lenovo ThinkCentre M92p Tiny, and for that reason the latter remains the system to beat.

Education reform being undermined ? Later On

The idea that profit-making corporations are the best model for any human enterprise seems widespread, even when the profit motive undermines an organization?s mission: profit-making hospitals, for example, are regularly found to provide substandard (and often life-threatening) care because the drive to grow profits leads to cost-cutting and understaffing with patients suffering (and dying). Some states for that reason allow only nonprofit hospitals. Libraries are starting to embrace a business perspective, military operations are increasing outsourced to mercenaries and private contractors, and of course schools are being turned over to private corporations: charter schools.

Richard Rothstein has in The American Prospect a sobering article on a major advocate of this movement, Joel Klein:

This is a story about a story, of how a fiction about impoverished children and public schools corrupts our education policy.

The fiction is the autobiography of Joel Klein, the former chancellor of the New York City Department of Education. Appointed in 2002 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Klein transformed the city?s public-school system by promoting privately managed charter schools to replace regular public schools, by increasing the consequences for principals and teachers of standardized tests, and by attacking union-sponsored due process and seniority provisions for teachers. From his perch as head of the nation?s largest school district, Klein wielded outsize influence, campaigning to persuade districts and states across the nation to adopt the testing and accountability policies he had established in New York. Deputies he trained when he was chancellor now lead school systems not only in New York but also in?Baltimore, Chicago, New Orleans, Newark, and elsewhere.

Klein resigned in 2010 to develop a new division at Rupert Murdoch?s News Corporation to sell tablet-based curriculum to public schools. His prominence in national education policy, though, has not diminished. He is?chair of the Broad Center, which is funded by Los Angeles billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad to train and place school superintendents who?ve been recruited not only from the education sector but also from leadership positions in government, the military, and corporations. The center?s graduates have included the Obama administration?s assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education, state school superintendents in New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Delaware, and district superintendents in?Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Seattle, and dozens of other cities. Earlier this year, Klein co-chaired, with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a Council on Foreign Relations commission that concluded that the country?s public schools are in such crisis that they?threaten national security. Klein has also become a contributor toThe Atlantic; his latest piece, in August,?denounced??ideological foes of business? contribution to the public good? who resist efforts of private firms to sell innovative products to public schools.

Klein and his allies hold teachers primarily responsible for the achievement gap between disadvantaged and middle-class children. In a 2010 ?manifesto,? Klein and one of his prot?g?s, Michelle Rhee, the former schools chancellor of Washington, D.C.,?summed up?their campaign like this: ?The single most important factor determining whether students succeed in school is not the color of their skin or their ZIP code or even their parents? income?it is the quality of their teacher.?

As proof, Klein?and others for him?cites his life story in what has become a stump speech for his brand of school reform. Again and again, Klein recounts his own deprived childhood and how it was a public-school teacher who plucked him from a path to mediocrity or worse. He offers his autobiography as evidence that poverty is no bar to success and that today?s disadvantaged children fail only because they are not rescued by inspiring teachers like those from whom Klein himself had benefitted.

This has become conventional wisdom in national education policy. As Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has?declared, ?Klein knows, as I do, that great teachers can transform a child?s life chances?and that poverty is not destiny. It?s a belief deeply rooted in his childhood, as a kid growing up in public housing. ? Joel Klein never lost that sense of urgency about education as the great equalizer. He understands that education is the civil-rights issue of our generation, the force that lifts children from public-housing projects to first-generation college students. ? In place of a culture of excuses, Klein sought [as chancellor] to build a culture of performance and accountability.?

Here is Klein?s autobiographical account in his own words, faithful to original context, culled from numerous speeches and interviews that Klein has given and continues to give: . . .

(AP) ? In a giant leap from more than 24 miles up, a daredevil skydiver shattered the sound barrier Sunday while making the highest jump ever ? a tumbling, death-defying plunge from a balloon to a safe landing in the New Mexico desert.

Felix Baumgartner hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph, according to preliminary data, and became the first man to reach supersonic speed without traveling in a jet or a spacecraft after hopping out of a capsule that had reached an altitude of 128,100 feet above the Earth.

Landing on his feet in the desert, the man known as "Fearless Felix" lifted his arms in victory to the cheers of jubilant onlookers and friends.

"When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data," he said after the jump. "The only thing you want is to come back alive."

A worldwide audience watched live on the Internet via cameras mounted on his capsule as Baumgartner, wearing a pressurized suit, stood in the doorway of his capsule, gave a thumbs-up and leapt into the stratosphere.

"Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are," an exuberant Baumgartner told reporters outside mission control after the jump.

Baumgartner's descent lasted for just over nine minutes, about half of it in a free fall of 119,846 feet, according to Brian Utley, a jump observer from the International Federation of Sports Aviation. He said the speed calculations were preliminary figures.

Baumgartner said traveling faster than sound is "hard to describe because you don't feel it."

With no reference points, "you don't know how fast you travel," he said.

The 43-year-old former Austrian paratrooper with more than 2,500 jumps behind him had taken off early Sunday in a capsule carried by a 55-story ultra-thin helium balloon.

His ascent that was tense at times and included concerns about how well his facial shield was working.

Any contact with the capsule on his exit could have torn his suit, a rip that could expose him to a lack of oxygen and temperatures as low as minus-70 degrees. That could have caused lethal bubbles to form in his bodily fluids.

But none of that happened. He activated his parachute as he neared Earth, gently gliding into the desert east of Roswell and landing without any apparent difficulty. The images triggered another loud cheer from onlookers at mission control, among them his mother, Eva Baumgartner, who was overcome with emotion, crying.

He then was taken by helicopter to meet fellow members of his team, whom he hugged in celebration.

Coincidentally, Baumgartner's feat came on the 65th anniversary of the day that U.S. test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first man to officially break the sound barrier in a jet.

At Baumgartner's insistence, some 30 cameras recorded his stunt Shortly after launch, screens at mission control showed the capsule as it began rising high above the New Mexico desert, with cheers erupting from organizers. Baumgartner could be seen on video, calmly checking instruments inside the capsule.

Baumgartner's team included Joe Kittinger, who first tried to break the sound barrier from 19.5 miles up in 1960, reaching speeds of 614 mph. With Kittinger inside mission control, the two men could be heard going over technical details during the ascension.

"Our guardian angel will take care of you," Kittinger radioed to Baumgartner around the 100,000-foot mark.

An hour into the flight, Baumgartner had ascended more than 63,000 feet and had gone through a trial run of the jump sequence. Ballast was dropped to speed up the ascent.

Kittinger told him, "Everything is in the green. Doing great."

As Baumgartner ascended, so did the number of viewers watching on YouTube. Nearly 7.3 million watched as he sat on the edge of the capsule moments before jumping.

After he landed, his sponsor, Red Bull, posted a picture of Baumgartner on his knees on the ground to Facebook, generating nearly 216,000 likes, 10,000 comments and more than 29,000 shares in less than 40 minutes.

On Twitter, half the worldwide trending topics had something to do with the jump, pushing past seven NFL football games. Among them was this tweet from NASA: "Congratulations to Felix Baumgartner and RedBull Stratos on record-breaking leap from the edge of space!"

This attempt marked the end of a five-year road for Baumgartner, a record-setting high-altitude jumper. He already made two preparation jumps in the area, one from 15 miles high and another from 18 miles high. He has said that this was his final jump.

Baumgartner has said he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.
