Liquidware debuts Amber, a customizable Android development tablet

Image

It's likely overkill for those interested only in some basic tablet modding, but the folks from Liquidware (no strangers to the DIY scene) have a new bit of kit that should please those looking to take on a more ambitious project. Dubbed simply Amber, the kit is described as "80 percent of the way to a tablet" -- you'll get a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, a 7-inch capacitive display and a customized version of Android 2.3, but no pesky casing to get in the way of any other additions you see fit to add. That convenience comes at a bit of a cost, though. The Amber will set you back anywhere from $983 to $1,674 depending on the kit you choose. Head on past the break for a quick look at it on video.

Guys have the edge going into 'Idol' finale

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Michael Becker / FOX

Will Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez or Joshua Ledet get cut? It's hard to tell this season who'll make the final two.

In most years, the penultimate week of ?American Idol? serves to finally eliminate the interloper, the singer who?s clearly at a disadvantage compared to the top two. Last year it was Haley Reinhart, whose exit paved the way for the Scotty McCreery-Lauren Alaina finale that everyone expected, and Casey James ceded the floor to Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox in season nine. (Hey, it made sense at the time.) In most other ?Idol? seasons, by the time we got to the middle of May, everyone knew who the two favorites were.

That?s not true in season 11. And while a gambler would probably lay the odds on a Joshua Ledet-Phillip Phillips final with Jessica Sanchez going home Thursday, there?s a legitimate case to be made that any of the remaining contestants could be in danger this week.

Phillip got the most criticism of anyone on Wednesday, as nobody liked the song he chose for himself (Matchbox 20?s ?Disease?). But that was only one of his three performances, and when he closed the show strong with Jimmy Iovine?s pick, Bob Seger's ?We?ve Got Tonight,??he came through with best individual effort of the evening. He?s the only one of the remaining finalists who has never been revealed as one of the lowest vote-getters, so he?s the best individual bet to keep going.

In sharp contrast to Phillip?s easy road to the final three, Joshua nearly didn?t even make it out of the first week. Imagine how different this season would have gone had he been eliminated back in March instead of Jeremy Rosado. Joshua was again in the bottom three when there were seven contestants remaining, but he?s been the strongest of anyone since that latter scare. He seemed to be the favorite of the judges (again) on Wednesday, even if his final song of the night --?Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" -- was a bit over-the-top in its frenzy.

And speaking of struggling, the same week in April that Joshua was in the bottom three, Jessica would have been eliminated had the judges not used their save on her. She?s sailed through the past month since then, but this wasn?t her best week. None of her solos?stood out, and she was the lone finalist to not get a standing ovation from the judges.

If Phillip and Joshua do make it to the finale, they will both owe an assist to Jimmy. The mentor is the one who picked ?We?ve Got Tonight? for Phillip, as well as prodding Joshua to go with Blige?s tune ? the only one of Joshua?s three songs that wasn?t at least 35 years old.

For Jessica? He picked ?I?ll Be There? by the Jackson 5, an attempt to make her sound younger. It didn?t work because she literally can?t make herself sound her age. She?s an old singing soul in a young body, like it or not.

Also noteworthy was that Phillip got credit for a ?moment? with his final number, though that might have been for the distracting way he was petting his leg with his left hand as much as it was for his vocals. He also earned an ?in it to win it? from Randy Jackson for the last effort.

Meanwhile, Jessica had to content herself with an endorsement from the last-place San Diego Padres. The last ?Idol? finalist to be touted by a sports team having a mediocre year was Hollie Cavanagh, who got support from Liverpool's English Premier League (that?s soccer, for the non-sports fans). That didn?t seem to help her much.

Then again, Steven Tyler did insinuate early in the show that he expected Jessica to win. So who knows? Unlike most years, it?s truly anybody?s competition with just one week remaining.

Who do you think will get cut Thursday? Share your prediction on our Facebook page!

U.S. Air Force keeping close watch on Boeing tanker

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Boeing Co's program to develop a new refueling tanker is proceeding well, but an aggressive test schedule and Boeing's plan to close the Wichita, Kansas, plant still pose some risks, said the Air Force general in charge of the program.

Major General Christopher Bogdan, who runs the $51.7 billion program for the Air Force, said on Thursday he was cautiously optimistic after the program passed a first critical milestone earlier this month, but that there is more hard work ahead.

"The program is on a good path, but we still have lots of work to do and there are still risks in the program that we have to work to mitigate," Bogdan told Reuters in a telephone interview. "The onus is truly on Boeing to continue to perform as well as they have so far."

U.S. defense officials and lawmakers are watching developments on the tanker program carefully after two earlier bungled attempts over the last decade to start replacing the Air Force's aging fleet of tankers, which refuel fighter jets and other warplanes in mid-flight.

Boeing beat out Europe's EADS to win the contract in February 2011, capping a decade of failed Air Force attempts to start replacing its aging fleet of KC-135 refueling planes, which are now 49 years old, on average.

Bogdan said the program got passing grades on all 89 entrance criteria to get to the preliminary design review, 17 mini-reviews conducted as part of the broader review; and a larger integrated review of the overall airplane program.

He said Boeing had done "an excellent job" with designing and building the new 767-based airplane's core capabilities, including the refueling boom and re-designed fuel-carrying wing pods, which was not unexpected given the fact that the plane is based on a commercial product.

But he said the company needed to rework its designs for some secondary items, including a screen between passengers and cargo, and the crew rest areas, by next summer.

"There are a few things ... that we are going to refine in terms of the design as we move to the (critical design review)," Bogdan said. Those issues, however, were "nothing earth-shattering" and not significant enough to jeopardize approval of the preliminary design review, he added.

Newly redesigned wing refueling pods promise to avoid the issues that plagued the tankers Boeing built for Italy, but the Air Force would be fully convinced only when it saw the actual pods, Bogdan said.

AIR FORCE SURPRISED BY WICHITA CLOSURE

Bogdan, who will swap jobs this summer with the deputy program executive officer of Lockheed Martin Corp's F-35 warplane, said top Air Force officials were surprised by Boeing's decision to move some manufacturing and finishing work on the tanker from Kansas to its Everett, Washington plant.

He said he learned about Boeing's plan to close its Wichita facility, eliminating over 2,100 jobs, the day before it was announced publicly, and had warned Boeing not to let the move affect the program or drive up costs.

He said there was no indication during the source selection process that Boeing planned to close the plant, and Air Force leaders were monitoring the move closely since there are other Pentagon contracts that the company works on there.

"The minute they told us they were going to do that, I got on the phone with the senior leaders of Boeing and ... I told them - you have now injected significant risk into my program and I expect Boeing to deal with that risk and never have it affect me or the taxpayer," he said.

Bogdan said Boeing had agreed, and was taking "very aggressive" steps to ensure the transition did not slow down work on the tanker program or increase its cost.

He said the Air Force was protected due to its fixed-price contract, which meant that any additional cost resulting from the move would have to be absorbed by the company.

Bogdan said the Air Force had learned from past attempts to replace the tanker fleet, and problems on other acquisition programs, including Lockheed's F-22 and F-35 fighter programs, in setting up its contract with Boeing.

He said the testing schedule was aggressive to get to a milestone decision in August 2015 that would allow the start of production, but unlike other programs -- about 60 percent of the testing would have been completed by that point.

The program also had a special clause that required Boeing to develop fixes for any problems that arose during testing, and retrofit any planes already built at that point.

He said the Government Accountability Office, a congressional watchdog agency, would visit the Boeing facility with him next week, and planned to keep close tabs on the program. GAO recently reported that the program faced "significant schedule risks" and technical challenges, and was already $900 million over budget.

Watch a DSLR get burnt, frozen and run over - for science!

8 hrs.

When a camera manufacturer says their camera is rugged, it's not always possible to take them at their word. Sometimes they mean you can use it to hammer nails in?a hurricane, but sometimes they just mean it won't break into a thousand pieces if it falls off the picnic table. The crew at DigitalRevTV decided to see how much abuse a Canon 7D could take, and it makes for fairly entertaining watching.

Canon's press materials describe the 7D as being "built to resist water and dust." That and a good sturdy magnesium frame keep it safe from most normal situations: dropping it in a puddle, leaving it outside in the cold, and so on. But I doubt even the Canon engineers would expect the camera to function after being frozen in a block of ice and then set on fire.

Be warned, there is some mild language in this video, but nothing too colorful. It's probably more dangerous for kids to see a $1,700 camera being subjected to wanton carelessness. They might get ideas.

Remember,?don't try this at home. It's dangerous and may possibly void your camera's warranty.?

Obama raises $44M for campaign, Dems in April

(AP) ? President Barack Obama raised a combined $43.6 million in April for his campaign and the Democratic Party as he faces a unifying Republican effort around Mitt Romney for the White House.

Obama's April fundraising haul fell short of the $53 million he raised in March. That's as his campaign said more than 400,000 people contributed to the campaign last month, including 169,000 new donors.

"This election is going to be close, given the historic challenges this country faced when the president came into office," campaign manager Jim Messina told supporters in a YouTube video released Wednesday.

Obama's fundraising announcement came the same day the Republican group Crossroads GPS said it would spend $25 million on ads critical of the president. Crossroads is the non-profit arm of American Crossroads, a "super" political committee backed by former George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove that has raised about $100 million this election to defeat Obama.

Indeed, Messina's message pointed to the millions of dollars being spent on anti-Obama ads by so-called special interests and oil company executives ? specifically calling out the Koch brothers, who founded Americans For Prosperity. That group has spent about $5 million on ads so far critical of Obama.

While Romney and the Republicans have super PACs working in their favor, so does Obama. Priorities USA Action on Tuesday released a video critical of Bain Capital, the firm Romney once headed. But Democratic super PACs have raised and spent less on average than their GOP counterparts, including Restore Our Future, which supports Romney.

Obama's campaign and the Democratic Party had about $124 million cash on hand at the end of March, while Romney and the GOP reported $43 million left in the bank at the end of March, federal reports show.

Presidential campaigns and super PACs have until midnight Sunday to file their fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission.
