TCTV: In the Studio, Entelo?s Jon Bischke Aims to Reinvent Recruiting

Screen shot 2012-04-04 at 10.39.25 PM"In the Studio" this week welcomes a serial entrepreneur who has previously founded four companies, three of which were acquired (two by public companies), quickly established himself as a thought-leader at the intersection of entrepreneurship and education, and now, after a brief stint as an EIR on Sand Hill Road, is back at it again founding his next venture focused on reinventing how companies identify and recruit talent. Jon Bischke?is a machine?when it comes to education-related startups. After exploring some ideas as an EIR with Battery Ventures, he noticed that not only were founders troubled by the difficulty of finding and hiring technical talent, but that these activities posed one of the great scaling challenges facing startups today. In parallel, Bischke noticed changing norms around the power of credentialing from traditional bastions of higher education. Whereas in the past formal credentials in technical subjects may have provided the strongest signal to employers, new reputation systems -- such as GitHub for developers -- have emerged and now provide new, and in some cases, more relevant signals as they pertain to the world of software development.

Troupe reaches back to vaudeville, burlesque for follies at the Folly ...

A group of theater artists have joined forces with one of Kansas City?s finest historical playhouses to stage what they hope will be the beginning of a new First Friday tradition: the New Century Follies, which will revive an old art form ? or something like it ? on the stage of the Folly Theater.

Seeing that the Folly was, once upon a time, a burlesque house, this effort to take the theater back to its less-than-genteel roots has a historical vibe that feels right.Count on some singing, dancing, juggling, broad comedy and a little bump-and-grinding, among other art forms. The artists plan to draw on the traditions of burlesque, vaudeville, clowning and magic. The new group?s official mission is to ?preserve the legacy of the Folly Theater by creating and performing art that encourages new audiences to discover the power of live performance inside one of Kansas City?s historical gems.?Officially the venture is a partnership between producer Jeremy Lillig; artistic directors Annie Cherry and Damian Blake; associate producer and associate artistic director Alex Espy and the Folly. Lillig is a Kansas City playwright; Cherry is well known as a neo-burlesque performer. And Blake and Cherry appeared in a couple of memorable live shows celebrating silent-film comedy directed by Espy at Lidia?s restaurant. Brad Cox will lead the People?s Liberation Big Band. And there?ll be an open bar. One of the explicit goals is to get young people into the Folly, 300 W. 12th St. The show kicks off at 9:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets cost $10 at the door. For more information, go to follytheater.com. ?Juicy Stories in ?Jolly Rancher?Playwright/actor/producer David Wayne Reed, one of the founding members of the fondly remembered Late Night Theatre, gives audiences a glimpse of his unique autobiography with his performance piece, ?Jolly Rancher.? Reed, who grew up in Louisburg, Kan., recounts through a series of short stories his experiences as a farm kid creating his own entertainment: performing impromptu drag shows for visiting seed salesmen, dancing for hay crews at the end of their work day and rehearsing Shakespeare in abandoned grain silos. Reed will perform at 8 p.m. Friday with special guest Honey Tahini; 8 p.m. Saturday with special guest Amy Farrand; and 7 p.m. Sunday with the legendary Ron Megee as his special guest. All performances will be at the Fishtank Performance Studio, 1715 Wyandotte St. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased in advance at brownpapertickets.com/event/237008. Vitals - Suicide risk spikes in week after cancer diagnosis, study finds

By Linda Carroll

The risk of suicide spikes in the weeks immediately following a cancer diagnosis, a new study shows. Patients were almost 13 times?more likely to commit suicide in the first week after learning they had cancer than they were prior to the diagnosis. Twelve weeks?after the diagnosis they were still nearly 5 times as likely to commit suicide as they had been before,?according to the study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The risk dropped after that, but in the year following the diagnosis it still remained 3 times higher ?than it was for people without a cancer diagnosis, an international team of researchers reported.

The study also found that the risk of death from heart attack or stroke also climbed - to almost six-fold ?- after a cancer diagnosis. That elevated risk?falls in line with other recent research showing that severe stressors, like losing a loved one, can pump up the risk of death from heart attack and stroke, said study co-author Dr. Murray Mittleman, an associate professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School and an associate professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The researchers hope that the new study will alert family members and health professionals of the heightened risk of dire outcomes after patients learn they have cancer.

?Our study primarily points to the severe stress experienced by newly diagnosed cancer patients," said the study?s lead author, Dr. Fang Fang, a researcher in the department of medical epidemiology and biostatistics at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.??We believe it is important that cancer patients, families and caregivers are aware of the stress-related health risks after a cancer diagnosis.?

Psychologist Anne Coscarelli agreed.

?This study ought to bring to people?s attention that cancer is an extremely stressful diagnosis and that it?s important to address the psychological and psychosocial needs of patients and their families when a diagnosis is made,? said Coscarelli, a clinical professor in the department of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles and director of the Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology at UCLA?s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

More research might help doctors find a better way to deliver the bad news, Fang said.

In the meantime, doctors should do their best to figure out which patients might be most at risk, Coscarelli said.

While suicide might be of concern in patients with a pre-existing mental health issue, ?you can?t use just that one single criteria to assess by,? Coscarelli said. ?One thing I frequently tell doctors is that you can?t assess the risk unless you spend time understanding other stressors in a patient?s life. Those other stressors might be exacerbated by this.? A patient might be going through a divorce or have some other family-related problems. One?s ability to tolerate stress becomes reduced when you add in multiple stressors. ?

Young people tend to be more distressed by a cancer diagnosis, Coscarelli said. ?They may be in the midst of career issues or have problems with financial security,? she explained. ?They might have young children at home so now they?re worrying not just about themselves, but also about the children.?

Patients should be encouraged to join support groups, Coscarelli said. ?I think many people do not think they want to participate in a support group because they think it will be more difficult to be around others with cancer. But sometimes they find it?s helpful to be with others who are going through the same processes and they can talk about things they wouldn?t otherwise be able to.?

To learn whether a diagnosis upped the risk of suicide and death from heart attack or stroke, Fang and her colleagues pored through data on 6,073,240 Swedes who were aged 30 or older. They identified 534,154 patients who were given a diagnosis of cancer, including 95,787 with prostate cancer, 74,977 with breast cancer and 62,619 with colorectal cancer.

The researchers found a striking increase in the risk of suicide after comparing the recently diagnosed to those who had no cancer diagnosis. And that was even after accounting for factors such as gender, relationship status (cohabiting or not), socioeconomic status and educational level.

Overall, there were 786 suicides among the patients diagnosed with cancer, including 29 people who killed themselves in the first week after learning they had the disease.

There were 48,991 deaths due to heart attack or stroke among patients who received a cancer diagnosis. The highest risk was in the first week after diagnosis.

Ultimately, the new study should be a heads up to everyone around a person getting a cancer diagnosis, Mittleman said.

"Friends and family members need to realize how devastating it is to receive this kind of news and that they need to be there for the person,? Mittleman said. ?And the message to the medical team is to be thoughtful about how the news is delivered and to make sure that there is some sort of social support in place.??

Trucker harassment class-action suit backfires

(AP Photo/Ryan J. Foley)

(AP) ? They were learning to become truck drivers but wound up in a nightmare. In detailed accounts to a federal agency, dozens of female employees of one of the nation's largest trucking companies told of being propositioned, groped and even assaulted by male drivers during cross-country training rides.

"I was beaten, I was fondled, I was humiliated and I was taught nothing," one trainee, Ramona Villareal, said in a deposition.

But rather than leading to a workplace discrimination judgment, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's sexual harassment lawsuit against Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based CRST Van Expedited Inc., has backfired and put the agency on trial. The agency is coping with a court ruling that could make it harder and more expensive to pursue large discrimination cases against companies in the Midwest, if not nationwide.

And dozens of women who described an ordeal of unwanted and aggressive sexual conduct may receive no compensation for lost wages or emotional distress because of judicial criticism of the agency's investigation.

A February ruling in the case sets a new standard for workplace class-action lawsuits in the federal court district that includes Iowa, Arkansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska and the Dakotas. Before filing a lawsuit on behalf of employees alleging similar discrimination, the agency will first have to investigate the merits of every worker's claim and attempt to reach settlements. If the agency doesn't, EEOC risks having the case dismissed.

The agency has argued that such a standard is impractical in cases involving hundreds or thousands of potential victims. At a minimum, the agency says, investigations would take longer and delay relief compared to other regions, where class-action cases can be filed with a lower standard. EEOC has a deadline next week to determine whether to appeal.

"We are an agency with limited resources already, and this is something that, if it stands, would make it even more challenging for us to address and vindicate discriminatory violations in the 8th Circuit," EEOC general counsel P. David Lopez told The Associated Press.

But businesses say the ruling could stop unfair legal tactics and prevent unnecessary and expensive litigation.

"It's incredibly significant," said Chicago lawyer Gerald Maatman Jr., who represents companies sued by the EEOC. "It is a signal by the federal courts that the tactics the EEOC has been using over the last several years may be improper."

The ruling came as the agency has made systemic discrimination cases ? those involving many employees ? a larger enforcement priority. EEOC investigates 100,000 complaints of workplace discrimination annually, and recovered more than $450 million for employees last year.

The agency's tactics have rattled the business community, which says lawsuits can cost millions of dollars and destroy reputations. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the CRST case denouncing EEOC's tactics and calling for the agency to be more cooperative with industry.

The trucking company case was prompted by a December 2005 complaint from driver Monika Starke, of Azle, Texas, who alleged she was paired with a driver who constantly made crude sexual remarks and advances. After she escaped his truck, she said, she was paired with another driver who demanded sex in exchange for a passing grade.

After failing to reach a settlement for Starke, EEOC filed a lawsuit in 2007 on behalf of all female drivers subjected to "a sexually hostile and offensive work environment." After the company sent letters to thousands of female employees, about 150 gave depositions in which they described being alone for weeks in trucks with male drivers.

One woman said her trainer asked for oral sex every morning and told her if she slept with him she'd certainly pass. Another testified that her trainer put on pornographic movies daily and told her he wanted her to perform similar acts. "And he never let me go a day without telling me that he controlled me passing or failing," Yvonne Fortner testified.

But some of their claims were barred for a variety of legal reasons. And EEOC's tactics infuriated Judge Linda Reade, who said the agency used "a 'sue first, ask questions later' litigation strategy." She dismissed the case and ordered the agency to pay CRST an unprecedented $4.4 million in attorney's fees, acknowledging "dozens of potentially meritorious sexual harassment claims may now never see the inside of a courtroom."

The appeals court largely sided with her in a 2-1 ruling, but threw out the fee award and reinstated two claims: Starke's and one filed by a woman who said her trainer repeatedly entered the cab wearing only his underwear. The court ruled that EEOC should have done more investigation and informal mediation before filing suit.

CRST is expected to renew its request for compensation for legal fees. The company said it took disciplinary action such as banning offenders from riding with females.

"We think it was a very favorable decision," said CRST General Counsel Eric Baker. "We certainly believe in all instances we took those matters seriously. We do believe that we will be exonerated."

But one case that reached a jury ? a California woman who opted out of the EEOC process and filed her own lawsuit ? resulted in a $1.5 million verdict against the company.

"It's a tragedy what happened," said Cedar Rapids attorney Matt Reilly, who has represented women in the case. "The sad thing about this is, the merits haven't been an issue for so long. The appeal was about technicalities."
