Corporate America has already voted OK on gay marriage

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday began hearing arguments on whether gay couples have a constitutional right to marry. But major American corporations have already heard the evidence ?and in their own way, decided it's OK.

Beginning in 2002, a leading gay-rights group, the Human Rights Campaign, began systematically rating corporate America's commitment to gay rights. The effort was born in large part out of frustration with the political process.

Democratic President Bill Clinton, who had embraced the support of gay activists in his winning 1992 campaign, later struck a different tone and signed the Defense of Marriage Act, whose constitutionality goes before the Court this week. His Republican successor, President George W. Bush, backed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

The Human Rights Campaign has found far greater commitment among corporate leaders focused on their bottom lines than among politicians seeking votes.

In 29 states it remains legal to fire or not hire someone on the basis of sexual orientation.

But among the 688 major employers rated in its most recent survey, HRC found that 99 percent prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and 89 percent offer health benefits to domestic partners.

In addition, 65 percent have parity in "soft" benefits for spousal and domestic partners such as bereavement leave, employee assistance programs, employee discounts, and relocation assistance.

Among the 20 largest publicly-traded firms on the Fortune 500 list, 13 received a perfect 100 percent rating across a range of practices relating to gay rights. Those include: Chevron, General Motors, Bank of America, Ford, Hewlett-Packard, AT&T, JPMorgan Chase, Verizon, AIG, and IBM.

"The private sector was always ahead of the politicians," said Hilary Rosen, a Washington public relations consultant active in gay-rights causes.

Now the public opinion has shifted markedly?driven in large part by younger voters who don't even regard gay marriage as controversial?politicians are catching up.

President Barack Obama embraced gay marriage in his 2012 re-election campaign. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, recently announced his support for gay marriage after learning his adult son is gay.

The dramatic increase in the number of gays and lesbians open about their sexuality has been a key element in the shifting dynamics of the issue. Whatever the Supreme Court rules, all signs suggest that both the public and American business will increasingly regard marriage rights as a settled issue.

Climate Change And Allergies And Asthma | Care2 Healthy Living

by?Karen Lee

As the pediatrician told me the lab results for my 3 ? year old son?s blood work, my heart jumped up and lodged in my throat.

?Allergy to Wheat, Dairy, Eggs, and Dust. What?s worse, he may also have asthma.?

ASTHMA!

This news was like a death sentence to a toddler. No cookies, milk, pizza, and mac & cheese! What will he eat? How will he know what NOT to eat at a playdate, or at a birthday party? Does he need to carry an inhaler for the rest of his life, like many of his friends at preschool did?

Are his allergies?my fault in some way?!?

Eczema And Allergies

As they say a mother?s intuition is always right. I was relieved, and also sad that my son?s month-long coughing fits, which prompted me to urge his doctor to do the allergy testing despite her insistence that it was just a cold, was indeed because of his allergies to so many things. And how about his eczema? I always suspected his eczema was related to some sort of an allergy, but the doctors vehemently disagreed with me on that too,??Oh, it?s because his skin is dry. Just put some Vaseline on the affected areas and he?ll be fine.? But I had a gut feeling they were wrong. Yes, he never had an anaphylactic reaction, or broke out in hives, but his eczematous skin always made me curious about allergies. Maybe I should have changed his pediatrician?

My reaction to the lab result is still visceral ? even now, almost twenty years later, because even as a young adult, he still struggles with the same issue. And so does his younger sister. After doing more detailed allergy testing, we recently discovered that they are allergic to more things. Ironically, the current allergist confirmed my belief that eczema is indeed strongly related to allergens. Can doctors agree on anything?

Who?s To Blame?

In my misguided, young and naive mother?s mind, (and of course, filled with inevitable self-guilt), I frequently wondered, are their allergies due to my being too clean and raising them in a semi-sterile environment? Should I have raised?them on a farm? Is it because I inhaled?formaldehyde for 3 three years, dissecting cadavers for Anatomy and Physiology Lab while being pregnant? (I had a miscarriage and a stillbirth during my four years of chiropractic school. My classmates speculated that formaldehyde played a huge role.) Or, maybe my husband should have done genetic testing for everything? After all, I am not allergic to anything, and I didn?t know his full medical history before I giddily accepted his marriage proposal.

The kids current allergists told me allergies are genetic and no one can do anything about it. The only solution was to give my kids a myriad of allergy pills daily or take allergy shots weekly. Sure?let me make my kids into pincushions or medical rats and let the doctors bill my insurance company weekly.

Climate Change And Allergies

The signs and symptoms of allergies differ in people. But when the effects are visible on your skin, the stigma attached to the condition is profound. I was neurotic about managing their condition like a hawk with proper diet and all the necessary precautions during allergy seasons ? even making the kids stay indoors during peak allergy seasons.

Last spring was the worst. Their eczema flared up like a Christmas tree. Starting in early March, afflicted skin areas were red and inflamed. This seemed way too early for allergy season in the Northeast. Rutgers University researchers announced that because of the mild winter, allergy season started early with vengeance in the NE. Since my kids are allergic to mold, rag weed, tree and grass pollen, they were miserable almost all of 2012. When tree and grass pollen season died down, ragweed season started. The particularly dry summer made matters worse in the fall when ragweed season started.

We live in the suburbs to be away from the city?s smog and air pollution?so we thought. We actually suffer worse in the suburbs because of the trees and grass that we are supposed to enjoy! In fact,?climate change and CO2 levels cause trees to produce more pollen. Worse yet, some scientists believe this trend will be worse in the future! Oh joy. So would it be better if we lived in the concrete jungle?

Our Kids Need Clean Air

People have different reasons for being passionate about the environment. My role as a mother of kids with food and environmental allergies has made me work fervently towards making sure the world we borrowed from them is not destroyed. My kids don?t need inhalers now, but who knows what the future holds if the current rate of climate change continues?

What are your reasons for advocating for clean air?

US Airways Silence Speaks Loud In Airport Takeover | News ...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Who gains the most from turning Charlotte-Douglas International Airport into a regional authority? It appears to be U.S. Airways as it merges with American Airlines.

The soon-to-be largest airline in the world?likes Charlotte, as long as it remains to its liking.

"What I know is that under city control to date, its been fantastic," said U.S. Airways CEO Doug Parker, speaking to reporters during a visit to the airline's largest hub.

Parker says he loves Charlotte. It's not just a great city, but the flying business for U.S. Airways is also profitable.

"If Charlotte were to lose its low cost, it absolutely would affect flying in and out of the hub, there's no doubt about it."

The airline operates 90 percent of the nearly 700 daily flights out of Charlotte.

It pays around $17 million to lease the gates and receives almost $10.5 million in "non airline terminal revenue." Its money travelers pay to park or buy food at the airport.

"The best model by far has been Charlotte," said Parker.

Yet, in the fight for control between an airport managed by Charlotte city council or a regional authority established by the Republican-led General Assembly, the boss says he's not taking sides.

"It doesn't make an enormous difference," said Parker, "so long as who's in charge of those models has the right goals."

Thursday afternoon, city council began the process of having a consulting firm study the legislature's plan to take over the airport.

Interim city manager Julie Burch told reporters the city council committee leading the effort will ensure that the study will be as independent and unbiased as possible.

"The city is now open to having some participation from our business partner and our best customer," said Charlotte City Councilman Andy Dulin.

That would be U.S. Airways, at first told last year it wouldn't have a say in picking airport director Jerry Orr's replacement once he retires.?

But Parker made it clear the airline expects to have a large voice in the process.

City leaders wish U.S. Airways would also speak out about who will control the airport. By staying quite, it appears to some Parker has chosen a side.

"All of this is about how we move forward in a profitable way for the citizens of Charlotte," said Dulin.

Parker also talked about ticket prices and jobs. Despite creating the world's largest airline through a merger, the future American Airline insists fares wont rise.

Afterwards, the 7100 employees based in Charlotte can expect no job cuts.

Local sports digest: California Golden Bears search for starting QB continues

Cal's quarterback competition remained tight after the Golden Bears' second scrimmage of spring camp on Saturday.

"I thought the guys competed, I thought they all made some plays," coach Sonny Dykes said. "Austin [Hinder] and Kyle [Boehm] ran the ball well at times and brought a little something to the table with their ability to run. It was positive to see that. Overall I thought it was a good day."

Zach Kline completed 5-of-6 passes for 88 yards, including a 59-yard connection with Drake Whitehurst and a 16-yard touchdown pass to Darius Powe.

Jared Goff was 5-of-11 for 90 yards with a 36-yard scoring strike to Bryce Treggs on his first throw, and Hinder completed 4-of-8 passes for 54 yards.

Boehm ran one series at quarterback as well as playing wide receiver.

Dykes said Boehm has "earned another shot at quarterback."

Boehm was not listed on the quarterback depth chart released Monday by the team.

Mexico denies Apple rights to the 'iPhone' name

    Location:

Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Naci?n (SCJN), Pino Su?rez 2, Mexico City, 06065, Mexico

The Mexican Supreme Court has upheld a lower court ruling that iFone, a small IT company in Mexico City, is the rightful owner of the iPhone name in that country.

The company registered the name in 2003, four years before Apple rolled out the smartphone it dubbed the iPhone, according to the Wall Street Journal. The case goes back to 2009, when Apple tried to register the phone brand name in Mexico and the Mexican Industrial Property Institute said it was already taken. Apple tried to take the name by suing, arguing that it had expired for iFone. Now iFone, which says its names is a combination of the word "Internet" and telephone in Spanish, is free to continue pursuing damages from Apple and three Mexican carriers for using the name.

China formally appoints top diplomats, defense minister

BEIJING (Reuters) - China formally appointed its two new top diplomats and defense minister on Saturday, positions which had already been flagged in advance as part of the new government of President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

Outgoing foreign minister Yang Jiechi, ambassador to Washington from 2001-2005 and a polished English speaker, was promoted to state councilor with responsibility for foreign policy.

China has only five such councilors and the post is senior to that of foreign minister.

Yang, 62, was replaced as foreign minister by Wang Yi, China's ambassador to Japan from 2004 to 2007 and a one-time pointman on North Korea.

Both were voted in by the ruling Communist Party's hand-picked delegates to the annual session of parliament, meeting in central Beijing's cavernous Great Hall of the People.

Reuters reported on February 27 that both men were likely to get their respective new jobs, signaling that China is keen to get on top of troubled ties with the United States, Japan and North Korea.

Chang Wanquan, who has overseen China's ambitious space program, was chosen as defense minister.

From a humble background, he has advocated the military's modernization, something which has jangled regional nerves, and was the frontrunner for the job.

While he sits on the powerful Central Military Commission, headed by President Xi, he is not one of its vice chairmen. The defense minister is more of a figurehead who will be the Chinese military establishment's face to the outside world.

Defense and foreign policy are both guided by the party's inner circle, the seven-member Politburo Standing Committee, rather than by their respective ministers.

Still, all three men face challenging jobs.

China has looked warily at the U.S. strategic "pivot" to Asia, fearing it is part of efforts to contain China's rising power, and both countries have fundamental disagreements about everything from human rights to trade.

China and Japan, the world's second-and third-largest economies respectively, have always had problematic ties due to Japan's occupation of parts of China until the end of World War Two. But the relationship deteriorated dramatically last year as a spat flared over ownership of a group of uninhabited islets in the East China Sea.

Despite the rhetoric and fears of a military escalation, China and Japan have been trying to set ties back on track, in an acknowledgement of how crucial economic and investment links are. Japanese-speaking Wang should be able to help in this regard.

The urbane Wang, 59, won plaudits for helping improve relations with Taiwan, the self-ruled island China claims as its own, as minister of China's Taiwan Affairs Office. The two sides have signed a series of economic agreements under his watch since 2008.

The other turbulent area Wang has dealt with close up is North Korea, as China's representative from 2007 to 2008 to six-party talks involving the two Koreas, the United States, Japan and Russia aimed at curbing Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

North Korea conducted a third nuclear test on February 12 and is ready to go ahead with a fourth and possibly fifth test. China is the isolated state's only major ally.

Soyuz returning to Earth with US-Russian crew

    NASA TV

Three crew members from the International Space Station get a view of the orbiting laboratory as they fly back to Earth in their Russian Soyuz space capsule.

    By Miriam Kramer, SPACE.com

A Soyuz spacecraft brought an American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts back to Earth on Friday after nearly five months of duty aboard the International Space Station.

Friday's trip occurred one day later than originally planned, due to freezing rain and fog at the Soyuz's landing site on the steppes of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. The fog was still thick when NASA astronaut Kevin Ford and Russian cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin made their touchdown in the steppes of Kazakhstan shortly after 11 p.m. ET Friday.

The trio successfully undocked their Soyuz TMA-06M space capsule from the space station at 7:43 p.m. ET as both spacecraft sailed high over Mongolia. Their departure marked the end of the space station's Expedition 34 mission, and the beginning of the Expedition 35 increment by three other crew members who remained on the orbiting lab. [See photos from Expedition 34 space mission]

The three astronauts spent 142 days aboard the space station. This was Ford's second trip to space, but it marked the first trip for both Novitskiy and Tarelkin.

Novitskiy, Tarelkin and Ford said their goodbyes to Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko ? the three astronauts staying aboard the International Space Station. Expedition 35 officially began when the Soyuz spacecraft undocked from the orbiting laboratory.

On Wednesday, Ford ceremonially passed the command of the station to Hadfield, the first Canadian astronaut to lead an International Space Station crew. "They showed us how to live in space," Hadfield said of the three departing astronauts.

Hadfield, Romanenko and Marshburn will not be the sole residents of the station for long. Cosmonauts Pavel Vinogradov, Alexander Misurkin and NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy are expected to arrive at the station on the same day of their launch from Earth on March 28. If all goes as planned, it will mark the first time a Soyuz capsule has delivered a station crew to the orbiting laboratory in one day. Russia's Federal Space Agency tested the one-day flight profile during unmanned Progress cargo ship deliveries to the space station.

NASA has relied on Russia's Soyuz crafts to transport astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit since the retirement of the agency's shuttle program in 2011. NASA officials hope to eventually depend on privately built, unmanned and crewed spacecraft to carry people and cargo to and from the space station.

The $100 billion laboratory was built by space agencies representing Japan, Canada, the United States and Russia. International crews of astronauts have occupied the station continuously since 2000.

US stocks close lower, ending Dow's 10-day rally

U.S. stock markets fell Friday, ending the longest winning streak for the Dow Jones industrial average in nearly 17 years.

The Dow dropped 25.03 points, or 0.2 percent, to 14,514.11 The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.5 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,560.70, just shy of an all-time high from October 2007. The Nasdaq composite index dropped nine points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,249.

The Dow had notched a 10-day winning streak through Thursday, its longest since November 1996. The string of wins pushed the blue-chip index up 484 points, or 3.4 percent, to a Thursday close of 14,539.14. The index's closing price on Feb. 28, just before the rally began, was 14,054.49.

Trading Friday was tentative because investors feared that rising inflation could cause the Federal Reserve to retreat from policies aimed at boosting markets. The government said that consumer prices increased in February at the fastest pace in more than three years.

The increase was driven by a spike in gas prices; the core index, which excludes the volatile energy and food categories, increased more modestly. But both figures rose 2 percent compared with a year earlier, enough to get investors' attention, said Peter Tchir, who runs the hedge fund TF Market Advisors.

"It's real and it's a drag, and I think people are growing concerned that it can get out of control quickly," Tchir said. He said signs of economic improvement and inflation "make them wonder if there will be continued market pressure on the Fed" to end its bond-buying programs.

The market's recent rally to multiyear highs was fueled in part by the Fed's efforts to keep interest rates low and encourage investment.

The Dow's win streak matched a 10-day run that ended on Nov. 15, 1996. To find a longer uninterrupted series of gains, you would have to go back to Jan. 3, 1992, when the Dow rose for 11 consecutive days.

The index's longest winning streak was 14 days, ending June 14, 1897.

Stocks opened lower and extended their losses at 10 a.m. after a closely-watched index of consumer sentiment fell to its lowest level since the end of 2011. The University of Michigan's preliminary consumer sentiment index dropped 5.8 points to 71.8, according JPMorgan analyst Daniel Silver said in a note to clients.

Stocks reversed the losses briefly at midday, then drifted back down in the afternoon.

Traders are processing big banks' scores on "stress tests" administered by the Fed. The Fed said late Thursday that JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs both need better plans to cope with a severe recession. It gave them until September to revise their plans.

Still, the Fed allowed both banks to increase their dividends and buy back their stock, signaling that regulators believe the banks are fundamentally sound.

The stock of JPMorgan fell 98 cents, or 1.9 percent, to $50.02. Goldman's stock rose 82 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $154.84.

The S&P 500 closed just five points from its all-time closing high of 1,565, reached in October 2007.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.99 percent from 2.06 percent early Thursday, as demand increased for ultra-safe investments.

Among the other companies making big moves:

? Cruise ship operator Carnival Corp. fell 78 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $34.95. The company said passengers have been booking vacations at a slower pace after a series of high-profile mishaps.

? Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. plunged after saying its fiscal fourth-quarter net income dropped sharply and fell short of expectations. The stock fell 41 cents, or 2.7 percent, to $14.54.

? Teen apparel chain Aeropostale Inc. fell 76 cents, or 5.2 percent, to $13.75, after posting a loss in its fiscal fourth quarter and saying it expects another one in the current quarter.

Real Estate Weekly ? Blog Archive ? Marketing Directors picks up ...

The Marketing Directors has won three new rental property assignments in Brooklyn.

    JACKIE URGO

The firm will provide ?development phase advisory, marketing and on-site leasing services ?at 250 North 10th Street in Williamsburg developed by LCOR, which will be available for rent in Fall 2013; 800 Union Street in Park Slope, a six-story, 28-unit property under development by Midwood Investment & Development and The Meltzer Organization, which will be available for rent in Spring 2014; and 282 South 5th Street in Williamsburg, a two-story, 80-unit property under development by Midwood Investment & Development, which will be available for rent in Fall/Winter 2014.

?We are delighted to take on these three new assignments in Brooklyn, a market where our team has been active for more than 20 years,? said Jacqueline Urgo, President of The Marketing Directors, a national development adviser, ?property marketing and sales force that works exclusively on behalf of owners and builders.

?We have earned a reputation for helping developers achieve the very highest rents possible during the initial lease-up ? the most critical time for a new project. It sets the tone for rents as they roll over and, very important, it has a direct impact on the value of the asset if the developer wants to trade it to an institutional investor.?

    Artist?s rendering of 250 North 10th

Urgo pointed to the success of ARIAS Park Slope, a 95-unit residential tower at 150 4th Avenue that was built by The Iconic Group in 2010/11. The Marketing Directors was hired to manage the initial leasing campaign for the property, an assignment it completed in nine months at rents in the $46-psf to $50-psf range. Upon lease-up, the developers sold the property to Invesco, a long-term institutional investor.

?There is tremendous demand for rental product across Brooklyn, especially in Park Slope, Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights,? ?Urgo said. ?Savvy developers are making the most of pent-up demand by creating measured, thoughtful marketing and lease-up programs that will enable them to achieve the greatest immediate and long-term value for their assets. We are proud to be the go-to team for the development and execution of such programs.?

The Marketing Directors is currently serving as exclusive rental agent on numerous properties throughout Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, New Jersey?s gold coast and central New Jersey. In addition, the firm is currently directing sales at nine condominium properties throughout the Metropolitan New York region.
