BEIRUT (Reuters) - Damascus and Aleppo came under shell fire on Thursday as troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad stepped up efforts to crush rebels threatening the government's two main power centers.
One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad's inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, put himself forward as someone who could help unite the fragmented opposition inside and outside Syria on a plan for a transfer of power.
Turkey laid down a marker by threatening to act against "terrorists" in northern Syria, a reference to Kurdish militants linked with the Kurdistan People's Party (PKK).
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said he would strike against Kurdish militants in Syria if need be, mirroring Ankara's policy of attacking PKK bases in northern Iraq used for the group's long-running armed struggle in southeast Turkey.
Turkey, a former friend of Assad and now one of his severest critics, closed its border posts with Syria on Wednesday to all traffic except Syrian refugees.
A bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants in Damascus last week and the surge of fighting there and in Aleppo prompted predictions among the 46-year-old president's enemies that his time in power was nearly over.
Assad himself has not spoken in public since the July 18 bombing, although he has appeared at formal televised events.
SHELLING IN DAMASCUS
Nevertheless, his forces have hit back hard, driving rebels out of most of Damascus, where opposition sources report executions of insurgents, and then counter-attacking in Aleppo, using helicopter gunships backed by combat aircraft.
Residents in the capital reported a shell landing in southern districts every minute on Thursday morning. Helicopters attacked Hajar al-Aswad, one of the last rebel-held districts in the city after days of street fighting, activists said.
Rebels said they had destroyed two Syrian army tanks.
"The Assad forces are trying to storm Hajar al-Aswad from more than one front. The (rebel) Furqan Brigade is engaging with them. There is a fierce battle," activist Mansour Abdallah said.
Rocket fire killed 16 people, including women and children, during an army offensive in the southern Damascus district of Yalda on Thursday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors violence in Syria.
The Observatory also said the bodies of 12 rebels were found in the al-Ajami area near the Jordanian border, in the south of the country. It said they were killed in shelling on Wednesday.
The army has sent reinforcements to Aleppo, determined to keep control of Syria's biggest city and commercial capital.
Fierce clashes raged there overnight, and one activist said rebels now controlled half the city, a claim that could not be independently verified, like others made by both sides.
"There was shelling this morning on the Salaheddine and Mashhad districts," said Aleppo activist Abu Hisham. "Now it has stopped, but helicopters are buzzing overhead."
According to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the army also shelled three districts in the central city of Homs, scene of some of the worst violence of a revolt in which dissidents say more than 18,000 people have been killed.
Raising the alarm over Aleppo, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius urged Russia and China to act with the United Nations Security Council to prevent a "bloodbath".
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned world powers not to repeat in Syria the mistakes they made in Bosnia, during a visit to Srebrenica where U.N. peacekeepers failed to prevent the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in 1995.
"I don't want to see any of my successors after 20 years visiting Syria and apologizing for what we could have done now to protect civilians in Syria, which we are not doing," he said.
TRANSITION ROLE
General Tlas, a former friend of Assad's who some have suggested could play a part in any transition of power, said he had not defected from Syria to seek a leadership role.
"I am discussing with ... people outside Syria to reach a consensus with those inside," he told the Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat in an interview published on Thursday.
"I left (Syria)...to try to help the best I can to unite the honorable people inside and outside Syria to set out a road map to get Syria out of this crisis".
Tlas, a former Republican Guard commander and a symbol of a now-fractured alliance between Assad's Alawite-dominated system and elements of the Sunni Muslim majority, defected this month and is now in Jeddah, apparently enjoying Saudi support.
Russia, one of Assad's few remaining allies, said calls for Assad to quit power were blocking efforts to end the conflict.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said such calls, led by the United States, Turkey and other Western and Arab nations, were fanning violence. He reiterated Moscow's contention that support for Syrian rebel groups was tantamount to backing terrorism.
"We propose things that would allow for an immediate ceasefire, but the other side says, 'No, either the regime capitulates or we will continue to back ... the opposition's armed fight', justifying terrorist acts," Lavrov said.
Russia and China have been bitterly criticized by Western states for three times vetoing U.N. Security Council resolutions intended to push Assad to end the violence convulsing Syria.
Iran promised to stand by Syria, come what may.
First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi told Iran's Press TV that Tehran's support for Syria, its main Arab ally, was "unchangeable", countering suggestions that Iran could soften its backing for Assad.

Normally a company is always keen to understand what consumers want and to be able to know, they often hire a secondary firm to get the opinions of consumers. Paid surveys online are usually the solution to this.
Companies use paid surveys to further improve their business orders. Paid surveys online can offer surveyed consumers various rewards which are not always only cash. Participants may be permitted to provide their survey online in return for products, discounts or to have their name submitted to a variety of paid surveys cash drawings.
There are many places that you will find paid surveys and the most accessible would be over the internet; paid surveys are actually there to benefit not just the company which commissioned the survey but also those who participate. But be warned seeing as there are sites that will charge a subscriber for information on paid survey programs online that can be found in other places that would actually cost you nothing.
Some participants rely on paid surveys to help them in their family obligations or even to acquire enough funds for an item they wish to purchase for themselves.
You might think that paid survey programs online are just too good to be true and even though this may be correct in some ways, you will find one or two paid survey websites which have superior reputation and you can rely on them for your success.
The profile you submitted is very important if you need to participate in paid surveys. Firms in charge of picking individuals to participate in paid survey programs look at their profiles seeing to it they?re going to fit the required survey. By keeping an up-to-date profile the actual numbers of paid surveys which may be available to you will certainly increase.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney says Barack Obama doesn't think entrepreneurs built their businesses. The problem is that's not what the president said.
The brouhaha over Obama's comments on small-business success shows no sign of fading and the president pushed back hard with new ads scheduled to run in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Iowa and Nevada in which the president directly counters Romney's claims. Romney and his allies continue to hammer Obama for comments taken wildly out of context, pummeling the president as a government-obsessed figure who thinks Washington gets the credit for the success of small businesses.
That was not Obama's point when he spoke in Virginia on July 13 about the government's supportive role in providing a stable environment in which businesses can thrive. Nor was it Romney's point when he used similar phrasing in 2002 about Olympic athletes who benefited from supportive parents and coaches.
But in a campaign that makes facts secondary to a good attack, the context doesn't seem to matter.
"Those ads taking my words about small business out of context? They're flat out wrong," Obama says, looking into the camera and addressing voters in the 30-second ad. "Of course Americans build their own businesses."
That is a tidier version of what Obama offered in Virginia.
"Look, if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own. You didn't get there on your own," Obama said then. "I'm always struck by people who think, 'Well, it must be because I was just so smart.' There are a lot of smart people out there. 'It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.' Let me tell you something: There are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help."
Obama cited teachers and mentors who helped "create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges."
Then, Obama teed up the line that left Republicans giddy. "If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet," Obama said, returning to his thesis.
"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."
Romney and his allies pounced on the "you didn't build that" portion and ignored the rest.
"Well, just read the whole speech. I found the speech even more disconcerting than just that particular line. The context is worse than the quote," Romney told CNBC on Monday.
"I cannot believe the president of the United States could say that I have not made this," one small-business owner says in a web video released Tuesday by American Crossroads, an independent group supporting Romney's campaign.
"When President Obama said in Roanoke that 'if you've got a business you didn't build that, somebody else made that happen,' I was personally extremely insulted," office supplier Melissa Ball of Richmond, Va., said on a Republican Party conference call with reporters.
Recognizing the potency of this theme, the Obama campaign began pushing back harder.
Speaking to about 1,000 donors in Portland, Ore., on Tuesday, Obama accused Romney of "twisting my words around to suggest that I don't value small business."
"Those are the games that are played in campaigns," he added. "Although I have to say, when people omit entire sentences from a speech and they start splicing and dicing, they may have tipped a little bit over their skis. They may have gone over the edge here."
The Obama campaign also released Web videos Monday and Tuesday rebutting Romney's assertions.
In one, the campaign accused the presumptive GOP nominee of having "deliberately altered the meaning of the president's words." A second video out Tuesday featured deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter, who said Romney was "not telling the truth about what the president said."
Taken as a whole, Obama's remarks aren't that different from Romney's comments in 2002 to Olympic athletes.
"You Olympians, however, know you didn't get here solely on your own power," Romney said after congratulating the athletes. "For most of you, loving parents, sisters or brothers, encouraged your hopes, coaches guided, communities built venues in order to organize competitions. All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them."
Romney's team didn't seem to mind the risk. The backdrop for his campaign stop Monday in California: a blue banner that said, "We Did Build It!"

Web Hosting ? BOSTON, MA ? Zerto today announced that 33 leading Cloud Service Providers (CSP) from around the globe have joined the Zerto Cloud Disaster Recovery Ecosystem (ZCE). Providers in the ecosystem are now able to offer cloud disaster recovery (DR) services in a way that was not possible before, enabling businesses of all sizes to cost-effectively protect production applications both to the cloud and in the cloud.
Businesses are looking to the cloud to provide cost-effective data protection for their production applications. With cloud DR, companies can now replace their primary or secondary data centers and benefit from cloud automation and flexibility while having a solid DR assurance. Until now, cloud-based DR for production applications had been ineffective, complex and cost-prohibitive. Due to limitations with legacy array-based replication, CSPs were required to have exactly the same storage type as their customers, increasing their overall costs. Further driving up costs was the complexity of managing these cloud-based DR offerings, which were inflexible, labor-intensive and difficult to scale. By resolving these problems for CSPs, Zerto makes the cloud itself more resilient, so CSPs can provide enterprise customers with tight SLAs and assurance when placing their most critical business applications in the cloud.
?Zerto?s solution has been adopted by cloud service providers because it enables them to offer simple, automated, storage-agnostic DR at an attractive price,? said Ziv Kedem, Zerto CEO and co-founder. ?Recent outages show that until now, customers hoping to use the cloud for disaster recovery had no viable options. The widespread participation in Zerto?s Cloud DR Ecosystem shows that the service provider community is eager to offer DR services that work better with their cloud environments and meet the rigorous standards companies expect of DR services.?
?For our enterprise customers, disaster recovery can be a critical step in the cloud journey,? said Ben Miller, Product Solution Director at Bluelock. ?Before Zerto, a true multi-tenant, cloud-based DR service compatible with Bluelock?s VMware vCloud Datacenter Services was not possible. Zerto provides a secure hypervisor replication capability that will allow Bluelock to provide a disaster recovery offering with the economics and agility of cloud computing that customers have been seeking.?
The Cloud DR offering that ZCE partners will deliver to their customers is based on Zerto Virtual Replication 2.0, the latest version of Zerto?s hypervisor-based replication solution. Companies can choose DR-as-a-Service (DRaaS), protecting on-premise applications to the cloud, and/or In-Cloud DR, protecting applications deployed in the cloud and replicated to a secondary cloud datacenter.
?Zerto provides a solution for our customers who want to decrease their costs while increasing the functionality of their DR environment,? said Ken Seitz, Manager of Product Strategy at Peak 10. ?Having Zerto as part of our overall BC/DR offerings allows simpler configuration for our customers and improves the ability to replicate directly into the Peak 10 recovery cloud. The ZCE combined with our existing cloud infrastructure makes disaster recovery available for a large segment of our customers who once thought it was out of reach.?
About Zerto
Zerto provides enterprise-class business continuity and disaster recovery solutions for virtualized infrastructure and cloud. Zerto won Best of Show at VMworld 2011 as well as 2011 Product of the Year Gold Award. Zerto Virtual Replication is the industry?s first hypervisor-based replication solution for tier-one applications replacing traditional array-based BC/DR solutions that were not built to deal with the virtual paradigm. WASHINGTON (AP) ? When Bally Total Fitness filed a proxy statement with the federal government in April 2000 identifying its major investors, the list included Mitt Romney as "sole shareholder, sole director, president and chief executive officer" of Brookside Capital Investors Inc., a Bain Capital investment fund that effectively controlled 5 percent stock ownership in the national health club chain.
Romney was the undisputed owner of Brookside, a Bain management partnership. It had been used for years to oversee some of the private equity company's expanding investments and takeover deals, including a $1 billion acquisition of Domino's Pizza the same year. But other Bain partners also held voting power in the interlocking investment funds the company used, along with Brookside, to exercise its stock ownership.
That complicated business relationship is at the core of the presidential campaign dispute over whether dozens of reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission show Romney's continuing role as CEO in the three years after he left Bain Capital in February 1999 to head Salt Lake City's Winter Olympics. Romney was named at least 39 times in SEC filings as sole shareholder and chief executive of Bain funds used in corporate takeovers and other investment deals, according to an Associated Press review.
Former SEC officials and other legal authorities familiar with securities law say such filings were legal formalities that reflected Romney's ownership stakes, not his actual management of the shares. Romney could have kept his management role during that period, they said, but the SEC documents are useful in establishing his "beneficial ownership" ? the voting power over stock holdings that he shared with his Bain partners.
The SEC's beneficial ownership statements have been required corporate filings since 1968, when a congressional act enforced their use to ward off the threat of surprise takeovers of public companies. The 1968 Williams Act ordered that any individual or company buying up more than 5 percent of a public company's stock needed to file a 13-D beneficial ownership statement within 10 days of the transaction.
The filings are used by the SEC, companies and investors as an early warning system to show the sudden accumulation of large stock stakes, said Brian J. Lane, a partner at the Washington law firm of Gibson Dunn and former director of the SEC's Corporate Finance Division, which oversees corporate filings.
After media reports cited Romney's SEC filings last month in raising questions about his role at Bain Capital after leaving for the Olympics in 1999, Democratic Party officials questioned whether those documents were accurate. Stephanie Cutter, President Barack Obama's deputy campaign manager, said Romney was "either misrepresenting his own position at Bain to the SEC, which is a felony, or he was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the American people."
The Romney campaign objected to her comments. Cutter later said she was not accusing Romney of committing a crime, but she and other Democratic Party critics have continued to question his SEC filings.

Math tutoring is one of the most frequently requested services for children looking to succeed in school. There are now many different private teaching services around the country that target specific areas of education. Mathematics is one of the subjects that many kids have difficulty with. Many children are shy to actually say that they have issues with this subject. It is always a good idea for the parents to be supportive and understanding of the child?s problems in school.
Services
Remedial math tutoring is one of the services that private tutors often offer their clients. This is necessary if the child has difficulty understanding lesson plans in school. This usually happens when the teacher explains the topic and reinforces it with the kids, but some kids still need more explanation. For the most part, many teachers are willing to help, but sometimes they run out of time, or the students themselves may be embarrassed to come out and ask for help in front of the entire class. A tutor can help to reinforce what has been taught to the child in the beginning of the week by giving examples that are easy to understand or explaining how the result was achieved in a different way. Mathematics can often be presented in different ways and some children are taught through other channels outside of what the teacher has presented. Sometimes, kids learn mathematics through repetitive movements and actions that help them understand the patterns that are being made.
Advanced math tutoring is available for students who wish to get ahead of the curve. Tutors for advanced lessons help kids tackle the next chapter in the curriculum in order for the child to be prepared. Many parents and even children like to come to school prepared for the upcoming subject because this actually gives them an edge in class. Children who are usually tutored for advanced subjects are those who are vying for an honor. Education has become very competitive these days and having an edge on other children is something that many parents and children put a premium on. Advanced knowledge also takes the pressure off of many kids who may feel pressured when faced with a totally new subject that they may have some difficulty understanding. Studying in advance not only takes the pressure off but it also helps to boost their confidence.
One of the benefits of math tutoring is giving the kids confidence in themselves by reinforcing what they have learned in school. Reiterating their topic and helping them understand it further, as well as helping them discover other ways to solve the problems, can make them more open to other solutions and ways to tackle math problems. Many mathematical topics are related to each other and it is always a good idea to promote deeper understanding.

From The Himalayan Times?..
In Turkey, the land of kebabs and sweet lokum, expanding waistlines are the target of a new anti-obesity campaign by the government to help one million Turks slim down over the next year.
The numbers are staggering: a little over one out of every three people is obese, according to health ministry figures. Even more when it comes to women.
?The fight against obesity starts now,? say publicity spots rolled out by the ministry to push back against lifestyle changes doctors believe are bulking up the 73 million population.
?Modern-day life has set constraints that make us eat faster and more without paying attention to the quality of the food we?re ingesting,? said paediatrician Murat Tuncer, a specialist in blood disorders.
But on the upside, he added, as a Mediterranean country Turkey has all the vegetables, fruit and fish required for a healthy diet.
The ministry sounded the alarm on the problem last month.
?Thirty-five percent of the population is obese,? said Health Minister Recep Akdag, who himself recently set an example by losing 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and recommends a walking regime of 10,000 steps a day.

If you believe the Manic Street Preachers, there is no true love ? just a finely-tuned jealousy. Once we've decided that another person is our special someone, we can become dangerously possessive and murderously unwilling to share them with others.
Such all-consuming jealousy has a major downside: it's just so much effort. What if you can't be bothered?
That seems to be how Hoffmann's two-toed sloths treat their sexual partners. Males do defend territories from rivals, but their slothful natures mean they aren't much good at holding onto females.
All sloths have a reputation for being lazy. This is sometimes exaggerated ? they don't sleep much more than humans do ? but basically correct. Sloths have unusually low metabolic rates and spend hours each day doing nothing.
Hoffmann's two-toed sloth is a case in point. It spends the day hanging upside-down from branches high in trees, often hidden away within tangles of vines. During the night the sloths move around and feed, often for 7 or even 11 hours. But they're not exactly athletes, moving along branches at just 14 centimetres per second.
They are also completely and utterly antisocial. Unless they're mating or caring for a youngster, you hardly ever see more than one sloth in a tree.
That suggests male sloths might be territorial, controlling patches of forest and preventing other males from entering. Controlling territory is one way of controlling access to females. But Zachariah Peery of the University of Wisconsin-Madison wondered how good these slothful males would be at monopolising females.
With Jonathan Pauli, Peery monitored 152 sloths in Costa Rica from 2010 to 2011. Most males had small home ranges of less than 0.2 square kilometres. There was some small overlap around the edges of the ranges but, in general, males kept out of each other's territories.
That wasn't true of the females though. On average there were 3.2 adult females within the range of each male, and 60 per cent of females lived in the ranges of more than one male ? sometimes as many as four.
So it didn't look like the males were monopolising the females, and that was confirmed by paternity tests. Females and their offspring were sometimes found living in the range of a male other than the father, so males aren't controlling the females in their territories. Or if they are, the males haven't really mastered the skill.
The slow-moving nature of sloths may be largely responsible for the males' casual attitude, but Peery points out another possible explanation. Males tend to set up their territories close to their birthplace, often within a kilometre, so neighbouring males were often closely related.
As a result, males can actually benefit their genetic legacy by allowing neighbours to sneak in the odd mating. By doing so, they are helping relatives to pass on their genes ? many of which they will share.
If that's true, careless laziness is a way to help your family prosper.

?In late June, articles began appearing in the Jewish press announcing a visit by US university presidents and chancellors to a seminar in Israel planned for 1-9 July. According to a statement issued by the seminar organizer, Project Interchange, the reported aim of the one-week delegation was to ?explore opportunities for academic and research collaboration, learn about state-of-the-art research initiatives, and study the unique academia-industry ties that have turned Israel into the 'Start Up Nation?? (?Leading US university presidents to explore innovation and academic cooperation with Israel,? 29 June 2012).
?
Among the scheduled delegates were Randy Woodson, chancellor of?North Carolina State University; Linda P. B. Katehi, chancellor of?University of California-Davis; Karen Haynes, president of California State University-San Marcos; Elliot Hirshman, president of San Diego State University; Dorothy Leland, chancellor of University of California-Merced; Beverly Daniel Tatum, president of Spelman College; Lawrence Biondi, president of St. Louis University; Harvey Perlman, chancellor of University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and Louis Agnese, president of University of the Incarnate Word.
Charles Schusterman, whose Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation provided financial support for the delegation, describes Project Interchange seminars as vehicles for ?unbiased study and reflection? that supply a ?balanced foundation for understanding Israel?s history, diverse make-up, and strategic objectives? (?University heads assemble for Project Interchange reception,? Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, 16 November 2009).
Seminar participants have similarly described Project Interchange delegations as occasions for ?unrestricted? dialogue and debate that promote tolerance? and ?diversity? (?ASUN president brings ideas back from Israel,??Daily Nebraskan, 14 June 2006).
A close look at the facts, however, reveals an Orwellian thrust to the discourse.?Project Interchange?is sponsored by the?American Jewish Committee, an unreservedly Zionist organization. It was founded in 1982 by the late Debra Berger, an Israel enthusiast committed to broadening international support for Zionism. Its major funder, Charles Schusterman, is himself an ardent Zionist as well as a pro-Israel philanthropist. Since its founding,?Project Interchange?claims to have invited to its seminars thousands of participants perceived as influential in areas that may serve to steer public policy, opinion formation and community action in directions favorable to strengthening Israel.
Project Interchange?organizes?Birthright Israel?tours for adults (Birthright Israel is a program supported by the Israeli government to provide free trips to Israel for young North American Jews).?Project Interchange?delegations meet Israeli politicians, academics, clergy, military and legal figures, scientists and health professionals, all of whom are keen on extending pro-Zionist sentiment worldwide. In what is clearly linked to the larger Israeli?hasbara?(propaganda) initiative to improve the faltering image of Israel internationally,?Project Interchange?has stepped up its efforts in recent years by recruiting more seminar delegates and encouraging them upon return to write articles, give interviews, enter into business deals with Israeli companies and forge ties with Zionist organizations in their home communities.
One such compliant delegate is?Cornell University?President David J. Skorton, now spearheading his university?s controversial arrangement with the?Haifa-based Israel Institute of Technology (also known as the?Technion) to build an applied science and technology campus on New York City?s Roosevelt Island (?Professors question Cornell-Technion partnership,??The Cornell Daily Sun, 2 March 2012).
In exchange for his cooperation, the AJC recently presented Skorton with its Avraham Harman Leadership Award, given annually to an ?individual who has dedicated significant efforts to strengthening ties between American Jews and Israel? (?AJC honors Cornell University President David Skorton,? American Jewish Committee, 21 June 2012).
Upon his return from a 2010?Project Interchange?delegation, Skorton and his wife, Cornell biomedical science professor Robin Davisson, posted several blog entries about their trip in the?Chronicle of Higher Education. These made clear their ensuing commitment less to advancing humanistic education than to making a Faustian pact with the?apartheid?system central to contemporary Israeli policy.
Rather than exposing true facts about the?wall Israel is building in the West Bank, Jewish-only roads and towns,?illegal settlements, collective punishment, second-class Palestinian citizenship, and Israel?s countless other violations of international law, Skorton and Davisson spent significant time denouncing the?boycott, divestment and sanctions?movement and insisting that US universities reject calls to boycott Israeli academic institutions. ?It is hard for us to imagine a scenario in which a boycott ? would be constructive and helpful, as opposed to divisive and destructive,? they wrote (?Skorton and Davisson blog from Israel on higher ed?s role in Middle East peace,? 23 June 2010).
Skorton and Davisson?s views are echoed by University of Miami President and former US health secretary Donna Shalala, who told? The Jerusalem Post, ?I joined the presidents of the major American universities to denounce the boycott of Israeli academics. I sent a personal letter to the presidents of universities here, as did the other presidents, promising there would be no boycott in the United States and that Israeli scholars would always be welcome? (?'There will never be a boycott of Israel?,? 12 July 2010).
Shalala has referred to such initiatives as anti-Semitic, stating: ?Whether it?s divestment or a boycott against Israeli academics [sic], it?s inappropriate and not worthy of any educational institution. I know of no American university that would support such a boycott? (?OSU President Ray among delegation of university heads on Israel visit,? Oregon State University blog, 15 July 2010).
Project Interchange?s calls for ?balanced? understanding and ?unbiased? study are thus deceptively one-sided. This disingenuousness is further evidenced by the limited exposure Project Interchange delegates receive to Palestinians. Rather than being exposed to Palestinian suffering, the delegates are encouraged to think of Palestinians as the aggressors. For example, they are taken to the Israeli town of Sderot ?to view the city that has been under fire from?rockets?from?Gaza? (?US college heads visit Israel, seek collaboration opportunities,? JTA, 4 July 2012).
It is little wonder that Cornell President Skorton upholds?Project Interchange?s bald assertion that Israel is a ?modern, Western, Middle Eastern, democratic, Jewish state,? and that he has been willing to propagate the pro-apartheid view that Jews and Palestinians are ?two increasingly separated communities [whose] differences of perspective and narrative ? may be intractable.? Accordingly, not only will the conflict never be resolved, but for 2012 delegate Louis Agnese, it is all the Palestinians? fault. Thanks to the trip, he said, ?I have a better understanding of why the peace talks collapsed in 2000. The Palestinians do not want to accept the legitimacy of a Jewish state? (?US Catholic college presidents connect with colleagues in Israel,??The Boston Pilot, 6 July 2012).
Although?Project Interchange?purports to foster ?cultural diversity,? ?dialogue? and ?tolerance,? then, its underlying objective is to dissimulate legitimate criticism of Zionism and Israel and discourage support for Palestine solidarity and resistance.
US university leaders are conducive to the?Project Interchange?agenda, not necessarily because they are unfailing Zionists, but because?Project Interchange?s pitch for collaborative ?entrepreneurship and innovation? promises, if inconclusively, to help resolve massive budgetary crises facing many US institutions of higher learning. The military industry so integral to the Israeli academy, comprising disciplines ranging from physics and nanotechnology, pharmacology, molecular genetics and opthalmology to water and agricultural ?security? studies, communication and counter-terrorism studies, is seen as a potential source of funds.
Writing in the aforementioned article published in?Yeshiva World, North Carolina State University Chancellor Woodson aptly demonstrates the cynicism of this approach: ?Sharing information on the strong ties between higher education and industry will provide meaningful examples for NC State?s continued efforts to support a strong economy in North Carolina.? The fact that Israeli industry is complicit in?ethnic cleansing?and other human rights violations and contraventions of international law, doesn?t seem to matter to Woodson and his colleagues ? for whom profit and greed have apparently trumped all sense of ethics and social justice.
Project Interchange?s?agenda is seductive, though, with major CEOs and venture capitalists as well as the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities jumping on the bandwagon in pursuit of contracts with Israeli academia and industry. Their cooperation conveniently dovetails with Israel?s desperate drive to prove the necessity of its devastating domestic policies, as it becomes further isolated economically and politically on account of growing international condemnation of its harsh treatment of Palestinians and of its self-serving manipulation of US foreign policy, all in the wake of the?Arab uprisings?and increasing petrodollar instability, which have challenged the sustainability of US and Israeli regional hegemony.
The pro-Zionist promotion of collaborative US-Israeli projects is indeed but one manifestation of?hasbara. Another is a largely neoconservative effort to ensure that US dominance in the Middle East ? especially over diminishing oil reserves ? retains a strong Israeli component.
While scholars as diverse as Cheryl Rubenberg, James Petras and John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt have argued that alliance with Israel is essentially unnecessary to US national interests, neocons and their followers are dubbing Israel the techno-scientific ?Start Up Nation? with the aim not only of making Israel more attractive to potential investors but of realigning and reintegrating the Israeli national interest with that of the 21st century United States as envisioned by the neocon purveyors of the Project for the New American Century.
With respect to the US academy, this scenario presents compounding problems. Project Interchange?s collaboration with Israel willfully implicates universities, their faculty and students in the illegal practices of apartheid and war criminality. One may now refer to Cornell as an accomplice in the development of?drone technology?(a specialty of the Technion) and in structural discrimination against non-Jews (a feature of all Israeli universities). Such collaboration will also likely exacerbate the longstanding suppression of campus speech critical of?Zionism, not to mention capitalism, at participating institutions.
Corporate donors do not take well to criticism and tend to use their financial clout to silence and intimidate students and professors who question their practices. Pro-Zionist funders are especially vigilant against scholarship that would expose and criticize their ties to unsavory Israeli military practices, and they do not welcome Palestinian, Arab and Muslim perspectives generally.
The current epidemic of US academic freedom violations against anti-Zionist and pro-BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) professors is directly connected to such conditions, as is the growing influence of youth-oriented and campus-based?hasbaragroups like Birthright, Israel on Campus Coalition and Campus Watch, whose mandates are, at least in part, to train pro-Zionist students to spy on their professors.
It is surely no coincidence that?four such cases involve universities within the California system: almost half the delegates to?Project Interchange?s 2011 University Presidents Seminar were from California institutions, and an entire April 2012 delegation was comprised entirely of faculty from?University of California-Irvine.
With calculated candor, these universities have tried to justify their negative actions in the name of corporate personhood or the fight against renewed anti-Semitism, as did the Technion when suing Google last year for hosting a blog critical of the university?s medical program (?Technion takes Google to court to shut down blog critical of medical program,??Haaretz, 6 May 2011).
Because the?hasbara?movement is exceedingly well-funded, we can only expect to see this pattern continuing unless the collaborations are halted. Whereas it may be unrealistic to issue a boycott call against complicit US institutions, it may be possible to censure the most egregious violators. The BDS movement, working with?Students for Justice in Palestine?and like-minded campus groups, might launch such an effort by helping raise consciousness among students and faculty nationwide, like during the campaign against South African apartheid in the 1970s and 1980s.
Demonstrations, teach-ins and negative publicity and letter-writing campaigns could be organized, imploring administrations to reject project collaboration with Israel and to reverse the institutional privatization facilitating it. In addition to galvanizing Palestine solidarity on campuses, these prospective efforts offer a golden opportunity for providing the wider, more sustained public education about Zionism and Israel so eminently necessary if Israel is to be prevented from continuing unheeded along its present, highly destructive path.
Editor?s note: an earlier version of this article wrongly attributed the statement??Martin Luther King?s ideals of equality, integration, peace, collaboration and the value of education? to?Spelman College President?Beverly Daniel?Tatum; it has since been removed. GREENVILLE, N.C. - Finally, Google+ beats Facebook in an online popularity contest.
The newest social network's been around for about a year now. And it tops the list of American customer satisfaction index as the most-liked social media site.
Facebook came in last.
Rankings are based on interviews with customers.
As a side note, MySpace didn't even make the list.

PHOENIX (AP) ? The ousted state senator who championed Arizona's illegal immigration law says he has no regrets but that he'd like voters to give him a second chance.
Removed from office in a November 2011 recall election in which the immigration issue was a major focus, Russell Pearce is now running to return to the Arizona Legislature, where he was Senate president.
Pearce appears to be in a tough battle as he faces prominent businessman Bob Worsley in the Aug. 28 Republican primary for the state Senate seat for a redrawn district in suburban Mesa.
Worsley, founder of the SkyMall in-flight shopping catalog and now involved in energy and mining businesses, has been endorsed by several major business groups and by all members of the Mesa City Council.
And Pearce trails in fundraising. He began the year with a campaign war chest of $35,555, but he reported raising only $2,822 through May 31. Meanwhile, Worsley raised over $67,000, which includes a $50,000 personal loan but also $17,445 in contributions.
By contrast, Pearce's recall election campaign, "Patriots for Pearce," raised and spent approximately $260,000, according to his final campaign-finance report.
"It's definitely harder to raise money when your first name isn't 'president,'" said Lee Miller, an attorney and Republican Party activist, referring to Pearce's former Senate leadership post.
One advantage that Pearce has going for him this time is that, unlike the recall election, Democrats cannot vote in the Republican primary.
"It will be a primary this time. It will be a fair fight," Pearce said. "It was the left that came in and removed me for keeping promises."
The Republican primary winner will be heavily favored in November because Republicans hold a 2-to-1 registration edge over Democrats in the district.
And Pearce and his supporters said he can draw vindication in the U.S. Supreme Court's June 25 decision on the constitutionality of provisions of the 2010 immigration law known as SB1070. The justices struck down several of the measure' key components, but upheld the so-called "show me your papers" provision that one Pearce supporter called the law's heart and soul.
The provision requires police to question people about their immigration status if they've been stopped for another reason and there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally.
Police in Arizona already can do that, but it'll be a requirement under state law once a lower court lifts an injunction blocking enforcement.
Approval of the law in April 2010 stirred protests, boycotts and court fights that embroiled the state in controversy.
The economic impact was hard to quantify because the law was enacted during the Great Recession, but a November 2010 study conducted by a respected Scottsdale economic consulting firm for a liberal-leaning think tank said boycotts cost the state more than $140 million in lost meeting and convention business.
The state Senate in 2011 rebuffed attempts by Pearce and other hardliners to enact more get-tough laws on immigration, including measures that would have put hospitals and schools on the front lines.
Business groups that helped squelch those efforts are now backing Worsley, providing endorsements that Pearce attributes to the immigration issue.
"What's the objection to me? One only ? they want cheap labor," he said. "If that's the price of doing what's right, I'd gladly play that price."
Representatives of the Arizona and Phoenix chambers of commerce acknowledged their groups differ with Pearce over immigration policy but they denied his cheap-labor allegation. They said Worsley's business background was decisive in drawing the groups' separate endorsements and that economic development is paramount.
Pearce "is a nice man ... but at this point we like some of the different perspectives that Mr. Worsley has talked about," said Michelle Bolton, a Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce executive. "It's no indictment of Mr. Pearce."
Worsley said SB1070 served the function of highlighting the federal government's lack of sufficient attention to the burden that illegal immigration placed on Arizona, but he said Pearce is obsessed by the immigration issue. "It's been one bill after another to focus on that topic," Worsley said.
Proposed state legislation on immigration and on gun owners' rights "cast Arizona in an extreme and unfavorable light," he said. "Some people are afraid to come here ? everybody's got guns and they're shooting people."
Those are themes used by Jerry Lewis, the charter school executive who beat Pearce in the recall election. Lewis is now running in an adjacent legislative district for a full term in the Senate.
In his current race, Pearce said he regards education as the top policy issue facing the state and that he has a record of accomplishments on a wide range of issues of concern to conservatives, but he said he has no regrets about immigration policy or anything else.
"I did nothing wrong. I still have the majority of my party's support," he said, noting that party activists elected him to a statewide party office earlier this year.
Immigration, he said, "is still a critical issue until the problem is solved."

We all know that absolutely no one purchasing a computer for school would dare consider its prowess at anything other than strictly academic tasks. All that matters is a healthy processor and lots of memory?the very notion of also having a discrete video card capable of enhancing games (only after all the schoolwork is done, naturally) would never cross anyone?s mind. So we?re positive that most serious students will be scandalized by the 2012 revamp of the Velocity Micro Vector Campus Edition, which for $999 (direct) bridges the gap between those two worlds in a way that would do any teen or parent proud. So if you can see past your outrage at this fusion of gaming and processing prowess, you might just see an impressive everyday system. All this earns it our Editors' Choice for midrange desktops.
Design and Features
Like most Velocity Micro systems (such as the latest Raptor Z90 and last winter?s Vector Holiday Edition), this latest Vector Campus Edition uses a variation on the company?s classic MX2-W chassis: brushed-aluminum exterior, crisp edges, windowed side panel, and striking blue interior lighting. It?s a familiar look, but it?s one that quietly allures and one that works. The aesthetic doesn?t carry over to the included keyboard and mouse, alas?they?re both basic black plastic?but you can?t have everything.
Front-panel ports are fairly limited: the obligatory headphone and microphone, FireWire, and USB 2.0?unfortunately, no USB 3.0. You get a better selection on the rear panel, with two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, eight-channel analog audio, PS/2, and Ethernet joining the DisplayPort, HDMI, and two DVI ports on the video card. USB dongles granting 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity come pre-inserted as well.
One thing you don?t get: bloatware. Like most boutique manufacturers, Velocity Micro ships its systems clean, so when you boot into the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 Home Premium, you won?t find any clutter at all on your desktop. Open Office 3.4 and Microsoft Security Essentials are available as no-cost upgrades so you can also have basic productivity and malware-protection functionality right out of the box.
The Campus Edition is covered by a one-year parts-and-labor warranty, and an extra $69 gets you a one-year VelocityCare warranty that also includes on-site service.
PerformanceRegardless of why you need (or want) to use your system, the Campus Edition offers a compelling spread of performance across applications. It didn't nab the top spots in our Futuremark PCMark 7 all-around-system or CineBench R11.5 rendering tests?those went to the Acer Predator AG3620-UR21P (4,551 versus 4,041 and 7.52 versus 5.17 respectively). But the Campus Edition managed the lowest time in its class in both HandBrake (56 seconds, with the nearest competition the 1 minute 3 seconds of the Asus Essentio CM6870) and Adobe Photoshop CS5 (2 minutes 40 seconds, with the Acer Predator a close second with 2 minutes 47 seconds).
In gaming, the Campus Edition was almost as good: It was the champ at Futuremark 3DMark 11, in both the Entry (5,222) and Extreme (1,098) presets, and at 1,280-by-720-resolution Crysis with Medium graphical details (108 frames per second, or fps). The Alienware X51 ruled the roost with Lost Planet 2 at 1,280 by 720 and middle-quality graphics (86fps) and 35fps at 1,920 by 1,080 with high-quality graphics (the Campus Edition competed with 72fps and 28fps respectively); the Alienware also surpassed the Velocity Micro at Crysis at 1,920 by 1,080 with Very High details (22fps versus 21fps), but that's not exactly a crow-worthy victory).
Other systems out there might surpass the Velocity Micro Vector Campus Edition (2012) in certain areas?the Alienware X51 is slightly better at gaming, the Acer Predator AG3620-UR21P at some processing chores. But the Campus Edition earns its place as our new Editors? Choice for midrange desktops because of its strong commitment to balancing all the disciplines. It?s an ideal well-rounded desktop for pursuing your well-rounded education.
