Suu Kyi cites widespread poll irregularities

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi said Friday that Myanmar's weekend elections will be neither free nor fair because of widespread irregularities, but vowed to press forward with her candidacy for the sake of the country.

Suu Kyi said opposition candidates had been targeted in stone-throwing incidents and other intimidation that hampered their campaigning in the run-up to Sunday by-elections that are considered a crucial test of Myanmar's commitment to democratic reforms.

The 66-year-old Nobel peace laureate told a news conference that the irregularities go "beyond what is acceptable for democratic elections."

"I don't think we can consider it genuinely free and fair if we consider what has been going on for the last couple months," Suu Kyi said. "We've had to face many irregularities."

She said there were attempts to injure candidates and cited two cases in which stones or other objects were thrown at members of her opposition National League for Democracy, causing one of the party's security guards to be hospitalized.

There were "many, many cases of intimidation" and vandalism of party campaign posters.

She blamed some of the acts on "people in official positions."

Despite the irregularities, Suu Kyi said that the party is "determined to go forward because we think that is what our people want."

The by-election is likely to mark a symbolic turning point by bringing Suu Kyi into parliament for the first time, an event that would raise hopes for a more representative government after a half century of repressive military rule.

The by-election will fill 45 vacant seats in Myanmar's 664-seat national parliament.

A victory by Suu Kyi and the opposition would do little to alter the balance of power in parliament but would give her a voice in government for the first time.

Plastic restraints failed to hold pilot, JetBlue CEO vows review

JetBlue CEO says he knew the pilot who become erratic on flight 191 to Las Vegas personally. But JetBlue promises a review of safety procedures.

The CEO of JetBlue said on Wednesday he personally knows the pilot whose erratic behavior led to a diverted flight and that there were no earlier signs of problems, although the airline will review its procedures after the incident.

A JetBlue flight bound for Las Vegas from New York had to make an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas on Tuesday after what passengers described as chaos mid-flight when Captain Clayton Osbon was locked out of the cockpit.

Aviation experts say that such incidents are rare. John Cox, an aviation safety consultant and former airline pilot, told the Associated Press that incidents in which pilots become mentally incapacitated during a flight are "pretty rare." He said he could only recall two or three other examples in the more than 40 years he has been following commercial aviation.

Passenger video of the situation shows Osbon ranting about Israel and Iran, among other things.

JetBlue CEO Dave Barger described it as a medical situation that turned into a security one. He said he did not think anyone from the company has since talked to Osbon.

"The captain's now in the hands of medical care, obviously, under the custody of the FBI," Barger said told NBC's "Today" program.

"I've known the captain personally for a long period of time and there's been no indication of this at all," Barger said, adding that the pilot was a "consummate professional."

Barger said, "We'll always take a look at procedures ... but I'm very confident about our procedures, the industry's procedures."

He credited the training of another pilot and other cabin crew staff in handling the situation on the flight which had 135 passengers.

Passengers described a chaotic mid-flight scene in which a man in a JetBlue uniform, apparently locked out of the cockpit, began banging on the door and demanding to be let inside.

Tony Antolino, a passenger on the flight who helped subdue the pilot, said the plastic restraints on board were flimsy and systematically failed. Passengers on the flight were rattled, and several had to restrain the pilot after his meltdown by sitting on him.

"They did not work, they failed," Antolino told NBC, speaking from Las Vegas. "We had to use seatbelt extenders, people's belts and physically our hands to try and restrain the guy."

Asked if he would review company procedures following the incident, Barger said: "Absolutely, but not just that, but also the entire event ... within JetBlue and also the industry."

The Federal Aviation Administration cited an "onboard medical emergency" as the reason for the diversion, and said preliminary information showed the co-pilot became concerned that the captain had "exhibited erratic behavior during the flight."

"The captain had exited the cockpit during the flight, after which the co-pilot locked the door," the statement said. "When the captain attempted to enter the locked cockpit,he was subdued by passengers."

The incident was the second one involving erratic behavior by a JetBlue crew member since August 2010, when a flight attendant, Steve Slater, bolted from a plane by deploying and sliding down the inflatable emergency chute following an altercation with a passenger.

CAMP HILL, Pa. (AP) ? Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum says he didn't always understand conservatives' frustration with Washington but says he comprehends it now.

Santorum was Pennsylvania's junior senator when he endorsed moderate incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter over conservative Pat Toomey in the 2004 GOP primary. The pick fueled conservative discontent, contributing to Santorum's defeat in his reelection bid two years later.

Santorum has told Saturday's Pennsylvania Leadership Conference in Camp Hill that the 2006 loss helped him grasp conservatives' frustration with government.

The former senator said he used to think Pennsylvanians didn't understand how business was done in Washington. He says, "In a sense, I didn't understand."

Santorum points to his consistent, social conservative stances to separate himself from the GOP presidential field, saying he offers an alternative to President Barack Obama.

NEW YORK (AP) ? One of Yahoo's major investors is urging shareholders to vote its four nominees on to the Internet company's board, launching a potentially nasty fight to transform its direction.

Hedge fund Third Point LLC, which has a 5.8 percent stake in Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo Inc., said it thinks the struggling company would fare better if its representatives were in the boardroom helping overhaul Yahoo.

Third Point's letter, released in a regulatory filing Wednesday, comes a week after the hedge fund said it would launch a campaign to get its four nominees on the board if the Yahoo's management didn't accept them.

The proposed directors are Daniel Loeb, the hedge fund's manager; former NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker; former MTV Networks executive Michael Wolf and turnaround specialist Harry Wilson.

The company's board is in the midst of changes. Of the 11 directors, four, including Chairman Roy Bostock, have said they will step down at Yahoo's annual meeting, which is usually held in late June. The departures are part of an attempt to placate shareholders frustrated with a long-running financial funk that has depressed the company's stock price.

The company also appointed two new directors to its board last month.

But Third Point's letter said that the appointed directors were not in the best interests of Yahoo, and the board still lacked expertise in the media and entertainment industries, as well as in corporate restructurings.

My good friend and roommate just started the challenging career path of becoming a successful architect. As we spoke about the difficulties of making a name for yourself in an established industry, I realized I was unequipped to offer advice. It had been almost five years since I had a real job.

Instead, I asked him what books he had read on building a remarkable career. To my surprise, he said he hadn?t read any.

This is a surprise, because I can?t think of any entrepreneurs that don?t have at least one or two favorite books on building a business. When I first got the idea of starting a business, I was voracious, reading everything I could on sales, entrepreneurship and marketing. If 80% of businesses failed, I wanted to know everything I could to be in the minority of success stories.

But becoming a successful architect is no less difficult than starting a business. Then why hadn?t my ambitious and capable friend read a single book on starting a career?

Most Career Advice Sucks

The problem is that most career advice sucks. While books on entrepreneurship are varied and numerous, most career advice falls into one of two categories: ?follow your passions? and ?use your network.?

Telling someone to simply follow their passions is a nice thought, but supremely unhelpful (similar to the entrepreneurial mantra to ?just start something?). What if you don?t know what your passions are? Or if your passions can?t earn you a living?

Similarly, telling someone to use their network is empty advice. What does that mean exactly? Should you be spamming your Facebook friends for job opportunities?

There are some good writers on career issues, but their ideas tend to be a minority in a sea of easy affirmations about following your passion.

Maybe Employees Should Think More Like Entrepreneurs?

Perhaps some of the blame in lousy career writing is due to the extreme shift in the accepted norms on employment. In my parents generation, you traded loyalty for lifelong employment. Today, I have friends in their mid-twenties who have already switched firms several times.

This liquidity in the employment contract also means employers are less willing to carefully guide your professional development. As my friend discovered when looking for his first job, HR managers wanted concrete skills, not just ?potential? and a university degree.

These are new challenges for this generation of employees, but they?re the same challenges entrepreneurs have always faced: how do you take intelligent risks? What constitutes a useful network? How do you market yourself and pick the right abilities to develop?

This is exactly what Ben Casnocha and Reid Hoffman have done in their book, The Startup of You. The thesis is that you should think like an entrepreneur, even if you never want to start a business.

Readers here will note I?ve been a fan of Ben?s writing for some time. • Cultivating allies and weak ties. Networking is a prominent topic, but unlike most pundits advocating conferences and business cards, the book goes into great detail on which relationships you should build, start or even let fade.
• Competitive advantage, not just passions. Passion is great, but it?s just one factor in having a great career (earning a living is another one!)
• Who you know is the what you know. We?ve all been told, ?It?s not what you know, it?s who you know.? But more emphasis on this book is put on the proposition that your network can be the source of your intelligence.

The book stays aspirational without sacrificing nuance. I get a lot of books to review in the mail, but fewer I?ve actively sought out. If you?re trying to build a remarkable career, this book is a must-read resource.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Newt Gingrich is asking supporters for donations as small as $2.50 to keep his GOP presidential campaign going.

The former House speaker told a New Orleans audience Friday that he can't raise as much money as front-runner Mitt Romney can. But he said he is gaining 500 to 1,000 new donors a day. He said many of them give small but that he welcomes amounts that might lead to larger contributions later.

Gingrich is asking for donations in multiples of $2.50. That's the amount he claims a gallon of gasoline will cost if he becomes president.

Gingrich promises to promote Louisiana's energy, tourism and seafood industries. He says he and his wife, Callista, lunched on crabmeat at Galatoire's restaurant in New Orleans.

The Louisiana primary is March 24.
